Stutter while watching Netflix/Amazon video
Hello all, I have an Alienware Area 51 with a NVIDIA 1070 and 16 gb ram. I use two monitors; an Alienware Ultrawide curved (the new one) at 100 Hz and an Asus 144 Hz. Whenever I am watching Netflix or Amazon there is a small stutter that affects video only. This happens every three to five seconds and affects the entire computer. For example, the mouse will drag or the game I am playing will skip. In addition, I noticed when I was playing path of exile that a massive latency spike will occur at the same time. This happens regardless if the show is playing or paused; if Netflix is up I have the stutter. Youtube and Hulu work just fine. I have tried Chrome and Edge, and even downloaded the Netflix desktop app and still have the issue.
One other thing to note is I believed this happened almost immediately following a BIOS update. I am embarrassed to say this (cause i did not really pay attention), but I received a message on the bottom right that, from what I remember, said was a BIOS update from Dell. I clicked it and it took about 30 seconds then was done. The next day I received another of the same message. Clicked it and after about 30 seconds it was done. No restart required. I have updated all my drivers and reset my modem. Any suggestions or help? thanks all.

After updating your Intel and Nvidia drivers (and reboot and testing)
... if it's still doing it, see this (yeah, I know it says laptops, oh well):
Laptops, 0.5 second delay when Nvidia triggered
Issue: Laptops with both the onboard Intel GPU + discrete Nvidia GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070 have a 0.5 second delay when the discrete Nvidia GTX GPU is triggered.
Description: Even on low intensity applications, when the discrete Nvidia GTX GPU is triggered, there is a 0.5 second delay or lag which can be seen evidently as a glitch or a stuck screen. Once the 0.5 second delay passes, the system performs normally.
Workarounds:
* Disable the onboard Intel GPU so that the system works only on the discrete Nvidia GTX GPU
* Or install the 3rd party application “TrayPwrD3” which will work with Nvidia in the background. This keeps the discrete Nvidia GTX GPU live at all times. But, this drains the battery very quickly so you MUST be using the AC adapter at all times
Root Cause =
The root cause has been identified as an issue being caused due to a “Windows 10 display cache issue”. Microsoft is releasing a hot fix on 3/19/18 which should resolve the issue.

Which Area-51 do you have? I think there have been 6 different ones released over the years.

i am not sure what version. it is about 2 years old and looks like a funky triangle. has win 10 and an i7-5820k 3.30 ghz

Man, I was hoping this would work, but no dice. I do not have an integrated GPU, and I tried the 3rd party app but it did not seem to solve the issue. What I did do which lessened it for testing (but it was still visable) was disconect one monitor. This made it so that if I did not know what I was looking for I do not think I would have seen it, but unfortunately, I need two monitors:). Thanks for the help and if you have any other suggestions please let me know.

Almost definitely, it's a Nvidia driver problem (or its settings) or ... the GTX-1070 video card just can't "keep up" with screens that big or more likely those high-refresh rates.
What's the deal with the high-refreshes anyway? Can you turn them down to something more normal for testing (like 60hz)?
Yes, start with only ONE connected ... lets say the "Alienware Ultrawide curved (the new one) at 100 Hz". If you can't run that one perfectly at 100hz on the DisplayPort ... well, you have a problem right there. That would have to be resolved before connecting the second one.

1. Sounds like an Area51-R2. I don't think many R3/R4's were released or made it into the field. Still, I would find out for sure.
2. Oh, right. I forgot that Intel Enthusiast-class processors don't have on-chip Intel video. Actually, I consider that "a plus" ... simplifies problem. So, yeah, that fix does not apply to you (oops).

So I did a couple of tests. I disconnected one of my monitors and the problem was almost completely gone (still there, but if you did not know what you were looking for you would have a hard time seeing it). as to the refresh rates, I am a gamer so I keep them pretty high. Finally, I have been using this same set-up for about 8 months with no issue, so I know the 1070 has the power, but I am worrying it may be failing. I think it more likely some type of update to drivers or something is causing the issue, as I play high-end games with no issue which should be far more strenuous than watching netflix.

I suppose it could also be an issue with the NetFlix s-t-r-e-a-m-ing app itself. The stream might have a 60fps/60hz cap on it, but it's having a hard-time syncing at the higher rate. Full-screen and Windowed might display different results.
Maybe you can re-config for each purpose with something like https://sourceforge.net/projects/monitorswitcher/
Anyway, without some thorough and methodical trouble-shooting, it will likely stay a mystery.
