Uninterrupted Power Supply

Does anyone have any thoughts/advice/links regarding UPSs?

Many of us have that 1000W PSU in our new Alienwares and having that extra security of uninterrupted power, preferably with Surge Protection, seems like a good investment, especially if your mains power isn't that reliable.

There are two scenarios:
a) full fat power draw during short outages.

b) system protection and controlled power-down to run as 24/7 cover.

Myself, I would like something that will keep my R10 going when the lights go out and send a signal to the OS to do a proper shut-down if the battery starts to run low. With USB connectivity, software etc. Especially if I'm out or asleep. We had a 1h+ power outage in the village a month or so ago and our UPS at work couldn't bridge that gap. I want peace of mind.

Does anybody have any recommendations? Capacity (for both scenarios), brands, types, experiences?

If you want a 1 hour or more UPS you will have to look at high end (expensive) commercial UPS Systems.   Most consumer UPS systems are lucky to last 10 minutes with a full load.  However they do have a PC USB connection and the PC will do an orderly shutdown.

There is a vast difference in price, true. I had a look on the Dell site for our company solution. Yikes.

I think most of us would like something that protects the PC and a monitor, maybe a router for long enough to stop doing what we were doing and close files and apps and shut down the computer in an orderly fashion, Or have it do it automatically in our absence. 10 minutes should be fine for that.

I'm a retired Regional LAN/WAN Network and hardware help desk manager.  I had a large area of responsibility within SSA (all the offices west of the Mississippi river to the Rockies).  There were in depth studies of power and outages at our SSA field offices.   The conclusion was most power outages were momentary or under 5 minutes.  UPS systems used for the server, printers and workstations (PC's) at the offices were spec'd based on the findings..  Obviously there are longer outages but they are not as frequent.

I have a home recording studio.  I have my recording desktop (i9 9900K CPU), monitor, recording interface gear, modem, etc all on UPS.  I have an APC Back UPS Pro 1350 S which is rated at 810 watts, 1.35 KVA, pure sine wave.   Testing, it will run all of my connected gear for 12 minutes, more than enough to orderly stop any recording.  It is USB connected to the PC and will orderly shut down the PC when the set low battery voltage is reached.

Just be aware not all UPS systems are equal, and a good UPS system will cost a fair amount of $$$.

Nice, I haven't seen the white APC gaming UPS before.

I use the non-gaming (no customizable RGB LEDs) version of this that model.  The PowerChute software is pretty user friendly for auto-shutdown.

I've used this company's UPS for over 20 years and they always worked as advertised with no problems.

I have one of their larger (more expensive) models protecting the home made computers, but this little guy seemed to have quite a family resemblance, so it protects the Aurora R9 and Alienware monitor.

Nice to not have to worry if the power goes out for any length of time, even if just for a minute.
