Alienware 14 error: \windows\system32\winload.efi
Hi I started up my alienware 14 today to be greeted with the following.
It started with checking media: fail a few times then says it cant load windows on a blue screen then followed afterwards with No boot device found.
after restarting it goes to attempting to repair then goes to a blue screen saying a required file is missing:
File: \windows\system32\winload.efi
Error code: oxc0000001
I must admit I'm not technically savvy when it comes to this kind of thing. I've done a bit of research, most of it comes back saying i'll need to do a factory restore. That if I press f8 or shift & f8 during start up it will go to alienrespawn, but this does nothing. Or some kind of recovery disk? which I don't have. Any help would be most appreciated! Cheers - Jon

It does sound like a corruption in Windows, possibly the boot files. Try going to the Bios by pressing the F2 button when you turn on the system. Once you are in the Bios, go to the “Boot” menu and then look for a “Boot mode” setting. Make sure it is set to UEFI. If it is set to Legacy, change it to UEFI and then save the changes and restart the system. You can also try pressing the F9 key in the Bios to reset all the settings to default.

Hi thanks for the reply, I've done what you said, checked boot mode, its definitely set to UEFI. but I've reset with f9 anyway buts its still doing exactly the same thing.

Thank you for confirming this. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do if you are not able to access the recovery options, the other option would be to reinstall Windows using the recovery media. Click here to view an article that explains different ways to access the advanced recovery options in Windows 8.1. You may be able to do it following the steps on the article. Please let us know how it goes.

I followed your advice and tried booting from a recovery drive I made using a copy of windows from another computer. As I tried to reinstall it kept saying the Harddrive was locked. Googled a fix for this and followed instructions but it didn't work, I was going around in circles so ended up giving it to a friend who basically had to wipe the whole thing using command prompt. We've reinstalled windows and all the alienware software (as well as alienrespawn) and it seems to be working fine now. Just as an unrelated question, the battery i've noticed only charges up to 57% before stopping, its probably about 2 years old now, is this normal? is it worth buying a replacement?
