Alienware 17 R3 - Software update wiped out USP ports, touch screen, audio, lights etc - Not Windows 10 update
Can anyone help?
I just finished an update and I thank the powers that my laptop keyboard and touch pad weren't killed. This wasn't the Windows 10 update, my system thinks it's still on 8.1
I ran the Dell driver update and it keeps saying that it wants to update my "chipset" and when i click "install" it downloads and installs, but nothing changes after i reboot. I rerun the driver update and it says it wants to update the "chipset" again.
Nothing on the USB ports work, the touch screen doesn't work, the lights don't work, the audio doesn't work.
I can't start any of the Alienware apps to look for updates.
I feel the irony that this happened just as my warranty period ended.
I've updated the BIOS firmware, the chipset and another driver using the Dell diagnostics. Nothing seems to change.

I tried several suggestions and this is the one that worked:
1. open device manager and go to the USB section
2. click on each device in the USB section and uninstall it
3. when they are all gone, right click on any device and select "scan for hardware updates"
It immediately turned on all of my ports

Please make a screenshot of your device manager to see if there are any drivers missing.
I just made a clean install of Win 8.1, had driver problems too, but managed to fix it.

You're me hero! Thank you, this saved me several headaches of frustration and agony. I had the same problem last fall, lasted for two months and got fixed by a major Windows update (win10). Thanks to you I don't have to go through a new period of suffering. Thanks!
