Alienware Aurora R4 Display problem

Hello everyone,

I just recently received the Alienware Aurora R4 which I bought about a month ago.
It was the base model except for the ALX Chassis and an upgraded video card: the 1.25GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti

I have a Samsung Syncmaster 21 1/2 inch monitor attached to it via the hdmi cable. It has been tested on my laptop as a second screen and I know that it works, very nicely in fact.

My problem is that even though the desktop will power up, and upon opening the case everything seems to be running fine, there is no display that shows up on the screen.
I know that it is connected correctly and is recognizing that is is connected because if I remove the hdmi cable from the desktop, it says that the hdmi connection is gone.

When the HDMI cord is plugged in, the screen seems to switch from hdmi to analog, and it continues switching back and forth for a while until it just stops.

I'm not sure if anybody can help me with this, as my friend thought that the video card was damaged in some way if I have this problem, but I feel like the community may be able to give me a better insight or help me figure out what my problem is before I contact dell and figure out how to get a new video card.

Thank you for reading,

Josh

Connect via DVI port and cable (only)... not HDMI , not VGA.

Be sure Samsung is set to DVI input.

Turn on Aurora. Can you see AlienHead BIOS screen? What happens next?

Try above on both DVI ports it there is more than one.

It is the Samsung Syncmaster SA350.

And I tried the DVI port before I got the hdmi, I connected the cord which the monitor came with, and attached it to the vga/dvi connector that the computer came with.

Out of curiosity, is there a reason why the dvi would work but the hdmi would not? Would I have to install it normally and then update the drivers or something similar to that?

And the monitor only has a vga and hdmi input. It does not have a dvi slot.

Well, computer display ports are: VGA, DVI, Display-Port (upgraded over the years)

Consumer Electronics (TVs, Amps, etc.) display ports are: HDMI

So, native computer display ports are better (especially when problems arise). The flashing you see is likely "HDMI Negotiation". There is an extra layer of complexity getting computers to naively support HDMI. It should work, but obviously it's not.

You can use a $3 adapter to convert DVI to VGA.

You can use a $5 adapter to convert DVI to HDMI (without sound). Either way ... the computer is using it's DVI port.

You can try calling Dell support, but since it's not a Dell monitor, you might not get an answer you like (if they can't get it working).

I think I shall just return my hdmi cord and get a dvi to vga one instead. Get a few bucks back, and try that cord instead.

And if it is still not working, it would have to be a video card problem, so I will give Dell a call.

Thank you for the help, I'm not well versed in the hardware side of things.

Get what you need, but I don't think I would return the HDMI cord right yet. You might have to make it work. Also, with one of those adapters, you need a standard HDMI cable. They work in a lot of other places also (home theater, etc.).

I know this thread is a little old, But I just received my Aurora with that same graphics card and when using a HDMI cable the video quality is bad. When using a DVI cable it's great. My main monitor is a Dell 2320L and the other is a 20 inch HP.and I get the same results on both of them when I hook up the HDMI cable. I tried 3 differen't HDMI cables and no change. That card must have a problem with the HDMI port so will just leave mine using a DVI cable.

Well I had my motherboard replaced because it turned out that I had a dead ram slot.
You might want to get your card's hdmi port fixed, because if you payed for something and its under warranty then you should call and get it repaired.
