Alienware M17x R5 keyboard ribbon cable causes 2 beep error code.

Hi there!

I have a 2014 Alienware M17x R5 that's experiencing a bizarre case right now as you can tell from the headline. What happened is that I was playing a game and it froze, windows was semi responsive at the time but I had to force shutdown. Upon restarting, I encountered a 2 beep error code which signaled "NO RAM DETECTED". Thinking the ram failed I went out and purchased new ram with the exact same specs as the original but it didn't work.

After countless days of opening it up, changing the ram  with different slots....I had forgot to insert the keyboard ribbon cable at the time and it booted. But I noticed i couldn't use the keyboard and turned it off and replugged it in. And I encountered the 2 beeps again...immediately. So I grabbed a usb keyboard laying around and left it unplugged and it boots consistently without problems.

So heres my question: Why would the BIOS run and confuse the built in keyboard with a memory problem? How does this happen in general? What if replacing the built in keyboard doesn't fix the issue? How can I exactly pin point the issue and resolve it without buying a 100 new parts with trial and error?

Also just an FYI, the warranty is expired and I'd prefer not to send it in to hear a "Sorry motherboard is fried and you need to spend 500$+ (note I live in Canada). Additionally the motherboard isn't fried if it runs fine without the integrated keyboard.

I have also discharged power from the laptop completely by removing the battlery, unplugging the AC adapter and holding the power button for 30seconds. The CMOS battery in this particular laptop is extremely hard to get to...to the point you'd literally need to remove everything connected to the motherboard to remove it from the inner shell.

What is an Alienware M17x R5 ? Built in 2014 ?

Yes, the motherboard's keyboard circuit or connector could be damaged.

Yes, beep codes are not always accurate ... it can happen like that on any failing computer.

Yes, keyboard could be bad.

You will only know what is truly wrong with the computer after you get it working 100% with everything connected.

The M14X R4 looks alot more dated than mine, which is why I put R5 instead. (comparing through google images).

It's just the integrated keyboard causing the 2 beep error code. I have left it unplugged for the past 3 weeks and it boots consistently without any issues. The ribbon cable itself looks intact, would you suggest to replace the keyboard anyways or try to replace the ribbon cable?

Thanks for your swift reply.

Well, I think you have to find exact model before you can order parts for it.

If I understand you correctly ... yes, I think I might try a different keyboard and ribbon cable.
