Alienware Steam Machine not shutting down properly
Hi,
I bought the Alienware Steam Machine, because the Alienware Alpha wasn’t available in my country at that time. Because I want to play my Windows-only games I first installed Windows 10 on the Alienware Steam Machine (I’ve researched, that the Steam Machine and Alpha are equivalent in terms of the hardware here). Then I noticed, that the Steam Machine won’t shut down properly, so I started researching. I found, that this would be a common issue with Windows 10 because of the hibernate feature or some bugs with the intel management drivers. None of the solutions online helped me. So I decided to install a clean version of Windows 7. I thought the problem was solved but unfortunately it was not.
The concrete problem is the following: When I shut down the Steam Machine everything seems normal (no display output, the illumination of the usb keyboard turns off etc.) but the system fans and the alien-light is still on. I updated every possible driver, windows and the bios via the dell software.
Do you have any suggestions? Thank you so much!
Edit: PS: Everything else is working really well on both win 10 and win 7

Hi,
Have you ran any type of system diagnostics? If not, try running a test on the hard drive and confirm if you receive any errors.

Hi,
thank you for your answer. As I came from OS X; do you have any suggestions for tools to run that kind of diagnostics on a windows OS?
Thank you
Edit: This is the output from HD Tune Pro (trial version)
No errors reported from the windows ram diagnostics ether.
Edit: The Dell diagnosis won't work (Dell System Direct is installed but the next steps wont run, see picture below) and the Dell Support Assist won't finish the stesstest (expected are 15 minutes but it runs already for almost 3 hours) :(

I ran the Alienware ePSA Pre-boot System Diagnostics. The result: „No problems have been found with this system so far. Do you want to run the remaining memory tests? This will take about 30 minutes or more.“ I did that too, and after almost three hours the result: „All tests passed“ showed up.
Any other suggestions?

Hi,
We are not sure if this could be a software problem with the OS, have you by any chance reinstalled Windows? We could also have our techs look into it in the repair facility.

Hi,
Thank you for your answer. Well I do not think that it is a problem with the OS because I only made clean installs, both for windows 10 and because the problem kept existing, i did a clean install of windows 7 (only a few days ago).
I assume it is a Problem with the BIOS and others in this forum do have the same problem. While the problem true and true affect other systems (not a steam machine/alienware alpha); are you using the same BIOS for all alienware systems? If so, maybe there’s a bug in the current BIOS version?
Thank you very much.
