Aurora-R4 cannot switch Audio output easily from headphones to speakers
When listening to audio through my headphones, I cannot unplug the headphones to hear that audio played through the speakers without closing the applications that are playing audio, or doing a reboot of the PC. The details of my hardware and software set-up are:
PC: Alienware Aurora R4
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 (64 bit)
Headset: Turtle Beach PX22
I have installed the headset following these instructions from Turtle Beach
Using with a PC - How to configure (PX22, Z22)

Questions:
(1) Can anyone tell me if this is normal, or is there some way to get the Audio output to switch from Headphones to Speakers in an easier way?(2) Why does it take up to 2 minutes to open the Windows Sound settings for Audio Playback?

At first glance, they appear to be a USB headset, but they are not. A clue is that you still connect the analog jack to the PC. I think the USB plug might just be power for the mini-amp.
1. No, not normal.
On my analog headset, the Realtek drivers support front-plug detection.
On my USB headset, the headset drivers switch it back and forth.
2. If Turtle Beach had you install any drivers, there might be a conflict. Or your drivers are messed up. With headphones disconnected, try a clean install of Dell Realtek drivers. Actually, bundled Microsoft Realtek drivers might work. Test with plain analog earbuds or similar.
Looking and those setup docs, looks like they were overly ambitious with all those systems supported (if it fails to work on PC without problems). Since they appear to just be analog headphones, you could try connecting them straight into PC without mini-usb-amp (like a phone) but you will need an "phone headset adapter".
Changing speaker config while running apps is pushing your luck. It depends on the app. Restarting app is not that un-expected ... but restarting PC ? No, shouldn't have to.

As stated before, it could be a software issue between the headset and the audio controller. Have you tried doing it with any other type of headphones?
Also, reinstalling the audio driver could help to resolve the issue. I had this happen to my PC and this is what fixed it.
