AW17 R4 - 4K Screen Problems

Hi all, I have a small problem (well hopefully small) that I need help with.
A customer has returned a Alienware 17R4 becuase the windows desktop screen edges have "disappeared"
At the top of the windows desktop there is a 3-4mm black line/dead screen before the screen reaches the bezel, same on the left hand side. So the desktop does not extend all the way to the screen edge.

The opposite is true of the bottom and right hand side, if you move the mouse cursor to the extreme right side of desktop the cursor disappears, same thing happens when you move the cursor to the bottom of the screen.

It like the whole windows desktop needs to move about 3-4mm northwest (North being top of screen)

On desktop computers you had the ability to completely adjust the desktop with arrows in each corner via nvidia control panel, the functions available in this version (laptop) of nvidia control panel seem to be limited and the function I need is not available.

Anyone with any idea how to fix this I'd love to hear from

GTX 1070M
Intel HD 530
32GB 2133MHz RAM

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Yes it has the same gaps in the system BIOS screen which worry me now you have bought my attention to it, that probably means its a hardware failure! What do you think?

Do you know if it is possible to get these screen re-calibrated?

that is not good. i hoped you say no.

if i understand it correctly, your Customer said it was fine when ´he got it but went bad short after. is that correct?

if yes, then it could be BIOS related. Power Drain, BIOS Update and BIOS Reset / Clear CMOS might help.

if all those Steps fail, then you have to give it back to Dell.

Edit:

actually Power Drain is the most promising Option. just remove the Battery and hold Power On Button for a Minute. then Boot again.

I'll give it a try, hopefully it works otherwise I could be up for a new LCD panel or motherboard. I cannot give it back to Dell as it is out of warranty so really hoping I can fix it myself.

Just completed full power drain. (main battery, coin cell and AC power disconnected) And no change.

Do you know if I reprogram/change values in  LCD EDID EEPROM would it make a difference?

I know of people doing this with failed LCD panels, especially the Alienware 18 panels that died when windows 10 was first released (Win 10/Intel HD or NVIDIA drivers were re-writing the EDID in the LCD firmware)

i hoped it would be a BIOS Problem.

sorry, i have no Idea if Recalibrating would work or not. that Question could be only answered by Alienware Support Guys but they don't Post on Weekends.

Yep, I always seem to have bad timing

Returning laptop to manufacturer is not an option it has no warranty available so I have to fix this myself.

Something interesting that I have come across in the last few days while looking at different options to fix this is:

Dell charge $641AU for the upgrade from a 17inch 1080p screen to a 17inch 4K 2160p with tobi tracking.

AU Optronics is the 4K screen manufacturer (or one of them)

I can purchase the following from ebay sellers.

(New) AU Optronics 17inch 4K  (3840 x 2160) panel - $120AU delivered.

(New) Original Dell 4K LCD screen cable - $30AU delivered.

(New) Original Dell/Alienware Tobii tracking module and cable - $50AU delivered

(New) Alienware 17inch LCD Bezel with Tobii window $30AU - delivered

(New) Alienware 17inch LCD cover with Tobii bay $50 - delivered.

That's $240AU total for what Dell charges $641AU for, price would be cheaper if I used refurb/used parts instead of new.

Already ordered five x 4K panels (one for repair on this job and the rest for upgrades)

1. ah, i get it now.

2. i believe when Upgrading from 1080p to 4K Screen the Motherboard needs to be replaced aswell. maybe the Board is included. but it would not surprise me if it's just the Screen and the Cables. Dell Prices are always high. i payed 65 euro for a Plastic Fan Holder for my Area 51. really nothing Special. just a Frame with 5 Holes for Screws.

3. good Idea. try to replace the Display. tell us how it goes.

Good Luck.
