Cheaper to repair or replace?
I have a custom Alienware 17 laptop that was recently affected by a massive lightning strike. The strike fired my power cable, and after replacing it I've found that not only does the laptop also need a new ethernet card, but the battery does not charge, and after doing a diagnostic I need a new battery, and likely new parts for everything associated with charging the battery. My question is this;
Would it be cheaper to send the laptop in to have these parts tested and replaced, or should I just cut my losses and get a new computer without the problems?
I'm asking because I'm honestly hesitant to bother at all with Dell customer service as I've had multiple poor experiences with them in the past. I know I need a new ethernet card and at the very least a new battery, but I suspect I also need replacement parts for everything between to power adapter and the battery as well. How expensive would it be to replace all this, and how long would it likely take to get this done if I send it to them?
Also, would you consider it worth the risk to send it to them at all or should I do it myself? Again, I've had issues with them in the past with this computer that started when I first even ordered the thing, and later when the screen broke and I had to send it to them to replace and when I got it back, the 'new' screen didn't even function and I later found out that they had given me a cheaper screen than the one it originally came with and they didn't want to replace it when I confronted them about it. Basically, I've been messed over before and would like to know the odds of it happening again.
