External graphics card enclosures

hey just wondering if there were any external graphics card enclosures i could use to run a bigger and more power graphics card on my X51 R1. i know i could upgrade to a 970 but i was just curious on tthe external enclosures as alienwares is only compatible with the r2 and r3 because is has a special connector port which is not on the r1. Other companies seem to use usb ones i think?

So I took a little stroll on google and it seems that external graphics card adapters (for gaming anyway) are proprietary for now.  AMD seems to be working on a standard but who knows when that will be.  Dell and other companies use a non standard adapter on the backs of their laptops and small desktops that are connected to the PCI-E bus like a normal graphics card would be.  Using USB, even USB 3.0 I do not think would provide enough power or throughput for decent graphics performance.  Its possible the USB driven graphics cards were very low power low end 'upgrades' for older systems with weak integrated graphics.  There are some solutions that I saw on Amazon that seem to plug into a laptop's mini PCI-E slot using a ribbon cable and from there went to an external full sized PCI-E slot for a graphics card.  You also had to plug in external power and blah blah.
