i need help - program crashes with the following message "Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown."

hi, i am at my wit's end if not beyond it already.

a program that i use on a daily basis(magic the gathering: online) crashes a few times nearly every single day. if im on the game for any significant period and am actively doing anything, it crashes and takes a good amount of new data with it. it is a collectible trading card game. it is quite frustrating, to say the least. i have already gone through trying to troubleshoot and fix this problem with their technical support people. it did not get resolved and they were unable to provide any further help.

however, before i go blaming their software, it would be prudent to eliminate any problem areas on my pc itself. i have done everything that they and others have suggested so far. checked my drivers to see if they were all up to date, tested my memory more times than i can count, opened up my case, gave her guts a good cleaning and looked for anything loose. even reinstalled the program. the most suspect thing i found were a few errors that could not be fixed when i ran chkdsk - there it listed a few problems of corruption with the "tcpmon.ini" file, of which a copy of one looked like this:

2010-09-15 14:49:02, Info                  CSI    00000124 [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:20{10}]"tcpmon.ini" of Microsoft-Windows-Printing-StandardPortMonitor-TCPMonINI, Version = 6.1.7600.16385, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch.

i went so far as to download a few debugging tools to try and work through this issue. but i got totally lost trying to make use of them. the two main ones were "process explorer" and "debugging tools for windows."

i am sure that this is all semi-useless without knowing my system specs and seeing either a screenshot or at least the text of the error message that keeps appearing. i will end my post by pasting those details in - they are rather lengthy.

many thanks in advance,

aXa t

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception

will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer

i have 9gb of memory. the pc is not even a year old. and this only began happening fairly recently. i even tried playing around with my virtual memory paging file size.

i recall that you only really need part of my dxdiag report info, but i wanted to include it in its entirety in case there is something else in it that may be of use. here it is.

The error seems to have something to do with the printer if I am reading correct, did u add a new printer recently ? Printing-StandardPortMonitor-TCPMonINI, Version = 6.1.7600.16385, pA =  Here is someone with similar prob-

yeah, i had seen that other thread prior to posting. it both seemed rather old and to have gone unanswered. my pc actually has no printer - it merely shares one on my homegroup. that printer is a hp officejet 4315 all-in-one printer. the real question though, is whether or not the corrupted tcpmon.ini files that chkdsk detected are even remotely related to the crashing with the "system.ot.of.memoryexception" error of the other program?

Yes, that counts as having a printer (network printer) ... it's just connected by ethernet and likely using TCP/IP as the protocol.

However, if ...

1. the printer works, prints, scans properly

2. Not sure about CHKDSK ... but if you My Computer/ Drive/ Properties/ Error Check and when it completes it says "No Errors Found"

... then I don't think I would worry about the tcpmon.ini error at this point and move on.

You should post your system hardware and software config. There is a forum Sticky on how to add it to your sig (so it shows on every post).

I think the main first question is:

How does the PC work when running other applications? Is "Magic: The Gathering" the only program you really have a problem with?

the pc has no other eal problems. it prints fine, other applications run well, etc. it is only just magic the gathering online(mtgo) that has a problem.

as to my system config and hardware specs, i could not find the relavent post on how to gather then neatly. i am still new to these here forums. a link to the sticky you mentioned would be much appreciated. the forums for mtgo just have us run dxdiag.exe and post that info. i will post something that may or may not contain the right info.

I would also wonder if this is an issue with Flash (assuming magic online uses flash or java) also look at those.  I have had to use restore points to undo software corruption for flash because the update/installer kept failing and I never figured why.

Then I would look mainly at the game for fixes. However, still be sure your Windows Updates are current.

Be sure you are running the latest version (patch if needed). I can't really find a proper support page (only looked quickly) but it appears to be older. On the icon you click to start it, go to Properties/ Compatibility and set it to Windows XP or the latest version it officially supports.

When you installed the game (or if you decide to try re-installing it) ... even though you are on Windows 7 (Direct X 11) ... if any game ever asks you about installing Direct X 9 ... always let it. It may or may not install anything but you must allow it if you want it to work. Don't worry, it won't mess up anything.

Also, what are your Virtual Memory settings in Windows set to?

the flash installer will fail if you have an internet window open. I also had to close STEAM to get the flash player download to work.

sorry for the delated response. i had somehow turned off all notifications to new posts. i ws actually thinking no one had responded to my last post yet.

my vritual memory settings. my paging file is set to a custom size of 14000 MB; with the initial size at 14000 mb and the maximum size at 18000. the recommended was 13809 mb.

the mtgo program mostly uses microsoft .NET Framework for things. i am not sure if that precludes any usage of flash or java at all. i usually keep those up-to-date, using the third-party program Secunia PSI to let me know when they need to be updated. as to .NET Framework itself, the mtgo game client is not yet fully compatible with the newest version, 4.0. i had installed 4.0 via windows update when it came out. which was around when i feel these issues began happening. i very promptly went and uninstalled 4.0 and rolled back to 3.5. yet the problem didnt go away. i sometimes do wonder if something from .net framework 4.0 still remains on my pc and is behind all this. and i would very much like to blame the makers of the mtgo game for not bringing their game up to the newest version of .NET framework in a timely manner.

ok, i'll try that. i had previous been using a "system managed size" on my virtual memory paging file, but changed it to the custom size after this problem first appeared. but honestly, i think i still had  .NET Framework 4.0 on the PC. the mtgo program needs to be run using .net framework 3.5. by the time i had rolled-back from 4.0 to 3.5 i think i had already changed my paging file to the custom setting.

also, thanks for the link to the .net framework checking tool.

About Virtual Memory:

1. Try setting it to "System Managed" on C: drive and check Automatically Manage for all drives. Windows takes what in needs/wants. Problem solved.

2. If Custom, the rule is Min: 1.5x physical and double that for Max. So, 9x1.5 = 12gb Min., and 12x2 = 24gb Max.

About .Net Frameworks :

.Net 1.1, 2, 3, 3.5 and 4 are all different. If a program requires one of these, it must be installed. It runs along-side the other versions (they can all co-exist). When you run the apps., it calls the proper version.

I don't know about Secunia PSI, but the easiest way to be sure you have all the required versions is to go to Windows Update, check for Updates, Optional Updates. If you don't have it, it will be offered. Once installed, the Service Packs for the various .Net versions might appear in the other Important/ Recommended Area.

Since Windows doesn't really provide an easy way to show you all the various .Net versions and their Service Pack levels currently installed on your machine, you can use this:

http://webtrickz.com/checking-net-framework-version-installed-on-your-windows/

As an end-user, you only need the Frameworks (run-times for running programs), not the SDKs (those are for developers)

while it looked quite promising and i thought i had gotten the problem solved, it merely took until today to reappear.

i had switched my virtual memory paging file to a system managed size. it seemed to have significantly reduced the frequency of the crash occurring. i was even able to run for longer period with the program, mtgo, up and running, under heavy activity. i even accidentally played a mission on starcraft 2 with mtgo still open in the background.  at one point, i was still able to do things on mtgo despite experiencing severe amounts of 'lag' between clicking. i looked at task manager and noticed my pc was using a little under 4gb of memory. i often would see the crashes occurring when i had barely hit 2.5 to 3gb - which was also when the lag in the program would become noticeable. honestly though, this is really more due to idiosyncrasies of the game itself than my pc. the game is well know for having once had a memory leak. supposedly it has been fixed....but the game still is very resource hungry and has issues reallocating the memory until the program has been shut down. i really don't even know what im talking about here.

i had spoken to a guy inside the game who does know that type of thing. he coded a few automated-trading bots that he operates as a money making business. he mentioned something he called "ram leakage" as being the cause of the error. i have no real idea what that is, how it differs from a memory leak; nor do i know if it is software or hardware based. as well as not know how to fix it, if you even can. help in this regard would be much appreciated.

Don't try to run 2 Direct-X games at the same time (even by accident) ... problem solved.

After you play MTGO for a few hours, save your game, logout, and shut down the game. That should release the memory but you might even have to reboot to really do it. Then, start playing again. If this is not acceptable, you should take it up with the support staff or programmers at MTGO (they are the only ones who can make your MTGO experience any better).

Keep your Virtual Memory on "System Managed". I think your computer and Windows 7 are fine. Have fun playing.
