M17x doesn't boot, Lights on, Black Screen, Blinking Scroll/Caps
Hi,
I got my M17x in 2012 and this kind of thing happens at least a few times a year. Normally, going through the process of unplugging the cables, holding the power button for 20 seconds then powering it on again does the trick, but its not working this time. Just to clarify, the keyboad and power button as well as lid logo light are all on as well as the video lights (eject, ff, rw, pause etc) but the screen is black. I am hooked up to an external monitor but it only turns on when windows starts, since that's not happening, the monitor isn't turning on. The scroll and caps lights are flashing, num is solid. When I press buttons it starts beeping. The fan starts up for a few short seconds, I hear the dvd drive start up for 1 second then everything stops. If you have any suggestions I'd be very appreciative.
Thanks

Hi!
These symptoms indicate that the video card has failed and needs to be replaced. See this article for more information.
If the system is in warranty, this replacement can be covered. Contact Tech Support in your country or send me a private message with your Service Tag and contact information (for US and Canada only) so I can help you request the replacement.

If you have taken it apart and cleaned the fans like I do from time to time then I might have the answer. the fan under the graphics card must be seated perfectly of the video card above will not do so either. I find that that power cord gets under the fan and prevents it from seating properly even if the screws feel they have tightened down right. Try plugging the fan in and screwing it down then finagling the cord between the fan and the mobo. then seat the graphics card as usual. I run into this issue every time and only remember the issue after i've about gotten angry enough to start breaking desktop figurines.
