M17x R4 fan running high after recent update

After a windows update last night the fan started running about 2-3 minutes after startup as if i was gaming on a hot day. Really blowing hard and making a lot of noise. CPU pretty idle around 1%.

Rebooted about 10 times and occurred every time.

System history in PC checkup showed a bunch of new services were installed:

DDDriver

DellDataVault

DellDataVaultWiz

DellProf

SupportAssistAgent

Not sure what any of that is, and didn't ask for it, but whatever.

Anyway, watched task manager and noticed that when the fan goes ballistic and exe had popped up with DataVault in its name. So disabled the two DellDataVault services and problem solved!  My nice quiet machine is back.

Just wanted to let Dell know so hopefully they can fix it properly.

Cheers

Re-installed Support Assistant, Re-started the machine, Double-clicked on the Hot fix and it shows - Support Assistant is not Installed :( Anyone else facing this issue?

Edit: On Windows 8.1 if that matters.

I am checking with the software team, sorry about this, for now you can un-install it until it's fixed.

Hi, thanks for this solution, I came across it on the XPS8100 forum.  I've just completed an install of an SSD and the associated reloading of data, which took a while, and when this problem occurred I thought I was either going to have to uninstall programmes or buy new hardware, either of which would've been tiresome and time consuming.  I hope Dell address this issue it seems a bit of an own goal on their part.

Yeah, has anyone escalated this with Dell? If so, what did they say? It seems like a very serious bug that the average person will suffer through without having any clue about what's going on.

I cant thank this thread enough! - my fan was going nuts, ran virus and malware scans, panicked a bit, took the fans out and cleaned them, ran temp checks which were really low (about 30 degrees c average), booked a laptop repair thinking heatsinks needed replacing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if I hadnt of found this thread I would be paying out for heatsink/fan replacements. I have now disabled auto updates from sys support and unchecked the data vault box as per this thread - fingers crossed. I had a complete spaz attack!!!!!!!!!

problem fixed thanks everyone!!!!!!!!!!

I experienced this problem today.

I tried a system restore and it didn't work. Was considering re-installing Windows until I found this thread!

Thank you very much for posting the solution, you saved me a lot of hours and headaches.

I have made tech support aware

Also, you can see that Francisco from AW support has also posted in this thread a few times.

I looked at Francisco from AW reply but unfortunately I couldn't download the hotfix, I get an Access Denied.

Anyway, the workaround is fine until Dell comes with an update.

Dell screwed up two of my machines with this forced download.  How can I prevent Dell from forcing software on me without my permission?

Just to pile onto this, same issue, M17 RX4, fans run like crazy, also have the system annoyingly accessing my DVD drive periodically.  Disabled datavault services, fan issue gone.

Thanks so much guys, i recently maxed my RAM and i thought it was the culprit, i even went to the extent of checking stuff through isolation ; same problem. Untill, i stumbled upon this awesome thread. Once i disabled the Dell Data Vault everything is back to normal now. Thanks so much for the help.

Shame on you Dell for being a Ninja and trying to KO us :)

I had the same problem of the noisy CPU fan. I uninstalled  Dell's Support Assist and SupportAssistAgent via the control panel/uninstall programs and the problem went away like magic.I have a Dell Inspiron 580s.
