Pc freezes
Hello,
Shortly, like 10 minutes after power-up, all of a sudden the keyboard and mouse become inactive and all activity on harddrive stops. After booting the pc performs fine. Sometimes you have to boot it twice. My problem is that I can't figure out where the problem lies: A damaged Windows file, a defect harddrive, or maybe a bad memory block, or a motherboard problem? The problem always occur shortly after start of the pc when you begin to work. I have run numerous programs - also the System Mechanic program that Dell links to - but none reports any problems.
My second question is (based upon the belief that the harddrive is at fault), if I buy a new harddrive, can I use the Recovery cd that came with the pc (Alienware Aurora, 2 years old)? The reason I ask is that I don't seem to have a product key to the cd (i don't think a key came with the pc), and if the harddrive is new, how can the recovery cd detect that I don't "cheat"? I imagine that during the installation it wants a product key. Otherwise I have to also buy a new Windows 7 disk.
Hope somebody have some suggestions or solutions!
Kind regards
H H Husen, Denmark

If it is a Windows seven issue you can try this.
Start / all programs / accessories / right click on command prompt / run as administrator
At the prompt ">" type this. sfc/scannow and hit enter. No spaces or anything else, just scannow.
This checks and corrects any W7 integrity issues. If there are issues it can correct it will correct and tell you so. If there are errors it can't correct. it will tell you this as well. If you get errors you can't correct initally, try running it again. If there are still issues shut down and restart computer and run the process again. It may take several attempts to repair over a period of time to get some errors fixed.
If you suspect a hardware driver corruption you can go into Device Manager and select the harware componet to see if there are any yellow " ! " signs. If not you can still try to update the device by right clicking on it and selecting the appropriate menu item. You can also uninstall the device using the same menu and then restarting the computer. The system will then reinstall the device driver onto the hardware. So if the driver was corrupted the reinstallation after restart should fix it.
