Replacement Hard Drive

I'm having a nightmare with replacing my existing hard drive, I'm trying to rule problems out and one of the few things not replaced is the hard drive, so I want to swap out the drive just incase its the cause.

The system is a M18x R1, OS is Windows 7 Ultimate, existing drive is Samsung 830, the new hard drive is a Samsung 840 Evo.

The BIOS can see the device, F12 boot manager can see it as a secondary drive but not a primary.

I've tried using diskpart (from Shift+F10) to convert to every format under sun no luck,MBR gives an error, gpt says "windows cannot be installed the selected disk is of the gpt type", if I create a new volume, new partition it says my bios doesn't support it, do I want to load drivers.

I downloaded the drivers put them on a flash disk, but windows cant see the flash disk nor an SD card.

The best I have gotten is, I have been able to do a factory restore, to the drive but the drive is not bootable, and I get an boot manager error.

I'm running out of idea's now, one got any suggestions ?

since i see it see's it as a secondary drive , you said anyway,  have you tried it o0n its own NO other drive installed, i know with my R2  when i had only 2 SSD's(840's) i had to remove the original 1tb dell drive (i raided my 2 ssd's).I  installed windows  no problem but wouldnt boot from them always said secondary, i had to install windows witht he dell original drive(so original operating system drive) removed  after i set up and went on and completed i installed the original drive  and all was great, now i even ran into same issue when i but the 1tb in external enclosure, it wanted to boot off that  when i installed a 3rd ssd and a MSATA SSD, and went to add to raid and redo windows... kinda interesting but i unplugged  it and all was fine lol

anyway  if you tried on its own... no other drives in the system ...:/

I have tried just the one drive in the system. If its the only drive in the system, the boot menu (f12) can't see it at all neither can the windows dvd. If the original and the replacement are in it, then it see's it as the secondary drive.

Keeping both in, it just won't let me install windows to it, but I can restore or factory reset using USB stick (respawn), I can also factory reset with just the replacement drive from a respawn back up. I have to do it about 3-4x before it gets to 100%.

It sticks at various points. which seems is common, on the Microsoft communities forum, some of the mods/admin comment to the effect of remove all USB, Serial, PCI everything but mouse, keyboard and video if the install hangs, so something inside the machine sometimes makes it hang.

My next plan is I'm going to try loading the original dvd with win7 ult, with both drives in. The original drive in Slot 1, and the replacement in Slot 0, this way I can see and access both drives. I've copied the driver from into the root of the original drive. I'm going to see if I can use the "load driver" option and load it from the primary disk, then I'll yank the primary disk and hopefully I'll be able to install to slot 0.

What is weird, after I have done a factory restore from USB, its created the 3 partitions, copied all the files over, yet I can't reinstall on the IS parition, even tho its got a disk image installed.

Replacing a hard drive shouldn't be this difficult :/
