It looks like the same problem with my x51 r3. I bought the desktop without any my DIY. But every day the computer crashed on the first time I start it. I must restart it immediately, it works fine. Have you met the problem in the win 8.1?
To the M18xR2 owner - Upgrading the OS is always messy. No matter what you do it always leaves rubbish behind. Try a clean install of the OS, make sure fastboot is off, boot system is set to UEFI and change RAID to AHCI is system BIOS. Use magicjellybean key finder to retrieve your windows key. Also disable windows fast startup in power options when you get it loaded
