The Optical Drives are the same size, and you shouldn't find it too difficult to install.
How to remove the Optical Disk Drive on the Alienware M14x R2

I have a r1, with a Samsung 830. My boot time (with password entry) is around 20 seconds. If you are going to upgrade tho, it is best to do a fresh install. Because when install occurs, it fits the hardware config. You won't have the same performance if you just install from a backup from a mechanical drive.
