M17X R3 brightness problems
Hello,
I have an Alienware M17X R3. It is about 1 year old.
It looks like that depending on what colors are displayed in the screen, my laptop brightness changes...
I've done some tests with multiple tab openned in my browser.
About 1 second after going into another tab with different colors, the screen brightness changes a bit.
I plugged in my XBOX in my hdmi port and played. The screen brightness change every few secs. My understanding of the hdmi in port is that the signal doesn't go through the video card(to avoid capture). So I'd guess that its my monitor that is bugged.
The brightness troubles doesn't happen to my external monitors.
It is just really annoying when playing games or reading/scrolling down a web page to have the brightness changing.
Anyone ever saw a problem like that? Is it software or hardware related?
Oh yea, my computer is still under warranty but before contacting Dell support, I wanted to make sure that I can't do anything about it.
Thanks
Ion

Ionultimate,
Can you boot into safemode and recreate the issue? Can you post a youtube video showing the issue?

Have you tried updating the video card driver?

Definitely check your drivers, and also check your power settings. Would like to test in safe mode as Chris suggested, or try and adjust brightness and power settings to max and test.
I would also check brightness levels when you notice it changing. Hitting fn+f4 or fn+f5 will allow you to decrease or increase brightness levels. If you notice levels drop you can check and see if the shortcut keys can modify it.
It is possible that your screen may be going bad, and that the inverter may be causing an issue.
For right now:
1. Update drivers (reinstall as clean install even if you already have the latest drivers)
2. Set power mode to performance and maxed out, and set brightness to max
3. Test in safe mode
4. Report back :)

Thanks for the replies,
I'll do some more testing tonight as long as getting videos on youtube to show the trouble.
I do not believe that it is due to video card as my hdmi input suffer from the same trouble and that the problem doesn't happen to external monitors. I'll come back to you in the next 48 hours with the results.
thanks!
