Thermal Controls in Alien Command Centre fails after Windows update

Hi,

My system:

Alienware Area-51 ALX  i7-975 3.33GHz, 8MB, 12GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

After installing the latest Windows updates (16/9/11) the Thermal Controls fails to initialise, coming up with a page-long error message. The direct effect is that the drive panel no longer functions - so the Alienhead is unlit and unresponsive, the top panels stay fully open even when the PC is turned off, and the fan is on at max speed all the time (the reason I can tell is that the PC is now at its loudest all the time!) I tried uninstalling Alien Command Centre but the problem persists after re-installing the latest version (2.6.17.0) from Dell website. I have noticed that the Area 51 ALX Chassis icon has a yellow triangle enclosing a yellow exclamation mark in the top right corner after the ACC is opened in AlienFX...

I curious if anyone else experienced similar problems and if anyone can recommend something. Thank you in advance.

I have an Aurora, today my fans run but no lights and have the same error page as you. Checked my log and yes it ran the 16th's Win Update. Did a system restore after reading your post but it did not fix it. I expect we wont be the only ones to post this issue. I have turned off Windows Update for now as I don't want it till it's fixed. Dont have the time to research it today but will be watching this thread.  Good Luck.

Thanks. I'll keep posting new developments. I'm new here even though I've had the Alienware for a year and a half now, seems there're a lot of issues with the CC judging from all the posts here. G'luck to you as well, I have a feeling we'll need all the luck we can get.

I have my Windows Updates set to Manual so I had 31 Important and Recommended Updates pending (this includes the new ones you installed).

They all installed without a problem.

However, since you had a problem (to be on the safe side) I exited AlienFX and Thermal Controller from the TaskTray before. I noticed there was 2 sets of .Net 4.0 patches.

as an aside, perhaps many C.C problems are caused by the .NET framework software and to try repairing it before attempting anything else.. My 2 cents worth.

This is a very interesting Forum with many well versed members. Thanks to all.

Yeah I pretty certain Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile is involved somehow. A revision of the updates installed confirmed a double update for it as well, but on 10/8/11 and my problem only started recently. Anyway, perhaps I'll consider uninstalling one update at a time from .NET Framework (there are six) and see if that does anything.

P.S: Nice system btw Telsa1856.

reply to my own post above. Okay, this fixed mine. reDownloaded the MS updates, did not fix it, on a reboot got a .NET error.

Went to CONTROL PANEL/ PROGRAM AND FEATURES/MICROSOFT.NET FRAMEWORK 4 CLIENT PROFILE/ UNINSTALL/ REPAIR.. Reboot and Voila.. ( that was after many futile attempts on other things )

I hope this helps someone; worked for me.

Regards to all and good luck khnguyen17.

Only .Net 3.5 and 4.0 are involved . If you are running CC 2.6.x I think it only uses 4.0 now, but some parts of CC might still use 3.5

Only FrameWorks are needed, not SDKs

Well after some frigging around. I came to the conclusion that it is getting the better of me!

Repairing .NET FW 4.0 doesn't work (from Control Panel - Uninstall a program - Repair to its original state)

Apparently I have all versions of it installed ( see below) but I only see version 4.0.

< Installed .NET Frameworks >

.NET FW 2.0 SP 2

.NET FW 3.0 SP 2

.NET FW 3.5 SP 1

.NET FW 4.0 Client

Might have to come back to it when I have more inspiration... Thanks all.

Hi khnguyen17

My Aurora is just a year old right now, not much younger than yours. ( fingers, legs and teeth crossed after reading some of the misery encountered in this forum )

All I have in my programs in control panel is  .NET Fram 4.0 client no other .Net Fram releases.( I do in my XP Machine )

From what I have read you can un-install the .FRAM for your PC in Toto without any adverse affects then go to MS Update and just install the latest version through Windows update, ensure your system clock is set to the right time and date as this can cause untold misery, your mobo battery could be kaput. Good Luck. These are my opinions, please only use at your own risk. Use CCleaner ( PIRIFORM with the red Icon Logo ) and in tools it will give you all installed programmes with the options to turn them off temporarily ( thru msconfig ) or uninstall them. Hope you have succes, this repair if you have one could point a finger at the C.C programme and MS as culprits.

Not sure if you are downloading all updates at once or not, but it is a good idea to select specific updates separately and download them and repeat the process until all updates are completed.

You may also want to consider researching the particular update using the 'K' number on MSFT's web site to see if you even want to download a particular update.

The .net updates should always be downloaded as a group and depending on what the updates of that group are, you may want to download them separately as well. Whether it requires a reboot or no,t I reboot just to insure nothing hangs later with other updates.

Also, after having issues downloading updates from MSFT Windows Update the windows integrity can become corrupt making it impossible to use the update feature. To correct the integrity of Windows you can run the sfc/scannow funtion in the Command Prompt.

Accessories / right click on Command Prompt / select Run As Administrator......... at the prompt typ in   sfc/scannow

If there are integrity issues they will be corrected if possible. If not you can try resarting the computer and run the sfc/scannow again. If there are still problems schedule a Disc Scan of yor drive and run the sfc/scannow again. This will usually restore the Windows integrity after a Windows update issue. (at least it works for me)

Well would you believe it: after nearly two months of geting nowhere, one fine afternoon I noticed the alienhead lighting up whilst installing a new update from Microsoft! It is now working perfectly. So patience is indeed a virtue - as far as doing something rash and most likely regrettable later. Thank you for everyone's input and I sincerely hope your headches with your hardwares - current and future ones - are short-lived and relatively painless. Cheers all.

Great that you posted the fix, even though you found no fix yourself, this will close this trouble post but will be available for others to view it and may save them hours/weeks of works, I always prescribe to the KISS principle ( keep it simple stupid ) and NEVER over-react by re-installing, re-formatting, etc; etc as a first solution; plus I also backup with Acronis once a month so I don't have to go the hard-way around; with that said I have never had to use my backup on this machine so I have no idea if it will work if I need it ( It worked great on my XP Machine more than once ). Sure sounds like MS did a doo-doo ( don't want to get booted off this forum by Dell so I wont mention that they are/maybe partners in-law on this one ).

Cheers to you.

Hmm, I too have an Aria 51 ALX and due to a problem reported elsewhere see

Re: Alienware Alien FX message

I used a month old Acronis Image.  I then installed all kinds of updates including all the Windows updates (except IE9 (*)) for the last 4 weeks without any problems whatseever.  N.B. CC  was not disabled during the updates.

(*) tried that a long time ago but had then problems with downloads so I un-installed it and went back to IE8. So perhaps if you guys had IE9 and there was an update to that, perhaps that created the problem.
