Update video drivers?

Hi guys,

I've seen a lot of posts lately about issues with the X51 and GTX 660.  I bought my i7 GTX 660 the day it was available and have had no issues whatsoever.

That being said, I'm currently running the 301 driver and saw updates for 306.  Can someone tell me the best way to update to these drivers?  Doing it through Nvidia's website?  I've never updated/installed drivers before AND I don't want to update if it will cause issues for me (as I'm currently running 301 without a hitch).

Any insight/instructions would be very helpful.

Thanks!

PS:  Should I look into updating the BIOS too?

Hi Ducayne, I think you have answered your own question. Other people are experiencing problems, yours is having "no issues whatsoever", if it ain't broke don't fix it. Same goes for the bios (assuming you mean system bios not vbios), bios updates are usually designed to fix specific issues you are having, if you are not having issues don't update the bios.

If you are going to update your Nvidia drivers, Dell's latest driver for your model is 301.42 which means you will have to use Nvidia's drivers (306.97) and the best way to do that is go to their drivers website http://www.geforce.com/drivers and click on  auto detect my GPU & download the appropriate driver. Create a restore point just in case then run the driver update. When it starts to install it will give you option of what you want installed and checkbox which is for a clean install of the drivers, check the box and uncheck 3D components if you don't need them then continue and install the driver, when completed reboot and hopefully you will have no issues. Hope this helps.

Regards

I find DELL should really update their driver page as it appears to be well out of date for some of their driver software, graphics being one of them, sound cards (onboard also) being another.

Yes, they are working on it. Yes, it's taking a long time.

Try entering without your Service Tag. Enter from the Generic List.

Most Dell/Alienware Desktops use fairly generic "Reference Design" dedicated video cards. This means that if you are having a specific issue not addressed by the currently (validated and) posted video driver, you can get more recent drivers from AMD.com or nVidia.com (and it should work). However, Dell doesn't necessarily always support them. Don't assume they work perfectly with every game either.

Things like on-board sound ... unless they are broken, you are not going to see an update posted (likely because none was every written ... no reason to). If you don't like the "heavier" software driver suites that Dell provides for things like Audio and Network ... you can often get a lighter (but less feature rich) driver from Windows Update or the device manufacturer.

For laptops ... I still recommend users get all drivers from manufacturer's website (Dell, HP, etc.) .

hhmm, I was thinking along the lines of them updating the chipset drivers aswell.  Also, you mention about the audio drivers not needing updating.  From what I gather, the realtek drivers on DELL seem to be a bit behind the times, which is a problem for games like total war - and the realtek website is an absolute nightmare for finding the correct drivers.

Really, for computers that cost this much money, don't you think that it's DELL's responsibility to provide their customers (under warranty) with regular software updates? I do, but that's just my personal opinion.

The realtek site is very easy to use. Always look on the right side for HD Audio Codec Driver. That's it :)
