15 R1, battery Issues

Alienware 15 R1, shipped August 18, 2015

Windows 8.1

Bios A12

Having performance issues with CPU-intensive applications. FPS drops happen often in minute-long periods. After diagnostics, the video card seems to be functioning fine, but the battery is not. The battery is original and degraded (the adapter is about two years old), but the laptop is on AC power the entire time and the battery should not be affecting performance. I disconnected the battery to see if this would fix the issue and found out that the laptop would shut down after launching CPU-intensive applications, suggesting that the laptop continues to try to draw from the battery, even when on AC power. My adaptor is 240 Watt.

How can I configure the machine to not draw from the battery when on AC power?

Hi @RoRaccoon welcome to this user to user forum.

You have seemingly already provided the answer to this problem. When playing the current power hungry games on an old laptop, it draws power from both the battery and ac adapter. The most common solution is to get a more powerful ac adapter and OEM battery. For a power user, reduction in battery run time may be experienced within 12 months. Dell recommends buying a new laptop battery when run time does not meet your needs.

I'm not looking to purchase a battery, I am looking to reconfigure the system. I can run CSGO at 150 fps and LOL at 180. In the middle of these sessions, it draws from the battery at seemingly random times causing my fps to drop immensely and make games unplayable. If I remove the battery the laptop shuts down when running the same programs. Is there some way to configure the computer to work without a battery? I've never seen another laptop unable to function without a battery.

Hi @RoRaccoon  our ASUS laptop is happy to have no main battery and no CMOS coin battery, because of the way it has been designed. However, this is just a basic laptop and unsuitable for gaming.
