15 R1, battery safety

Question

I have an old Alienware 15 R1, way beyond its warranty period. the battery never worked for the past few years probably because I always used desktop mode battery charge.  Recently a message has come up saying my battery has permanently failed. I've always ignored the message and continue to run the laptop. I had also seen a post the other day regarding how bad batteries can be fire hazards. Is this true in my case? I only need this laptop to run on wall charge if need be. I dnt know whether to ask for service from dell, buy a new laptop or do nothing at all. Any help?

If the battery is dead, remove it from the system and recycle it before it swells and becomes a hazard.  It's up to you whether you want to replace it;  the system will run fine without it.

Yeah I want to remove it as well, though I am not confident in my abilities to pick the laptop apart and put it back together. This is after I saw the tutorial on how to do it. Would dell do this for a price or do I need to find another service guy?

You can pay Dell to assign a contractor to arrange an 'Out of Warranty' repair, if this service is available in your country. This repair will have Dell warranty to pay for any damage that the Dell contractor does to your Alienware 15. You are obligated to be present during repair, so that you can make claim, and check that your Alienware 15 has no faults after repair.

It the lithium-ion battery starts leaking its chemicals, it will destroy you, laptop, anything it comes into contact with. Its your choice to knowingly do nothing and accept the risk of this hazard.

It's possible, but Dell charges a flat $200 for service, which is expensive unless you're also buying a battery.

Any local computer shop can do the job for whatever an hour's labor costs -- likely well under half that.

Replace the battery and get a new one. I would recommend going to micro center or best buy as they help the best for these situations of installing it into the laptop. My dad owned my 15 before me and he knew how to disassemble it to the point where it’s empty and he just puts it back together.
