15 R2, BIOS Update 1.11.0 Soft-brick

Okay so I updated the BIOS version 1.11.0 like any BIOS update I would normally do. Clear all tasks, plug in the AC, ensure the battery's charged etc.

Downloaded the update from my Service ID's Support Page so that's one thing out of the way.

The update went fine, no errors at all.

The laptop rebooted a couple of times and now it just brings me to the Advanced Repair Setup all the time. I can open the BIOS setting and it does say 1.11.0. But I can't seem to turn this thing on.

Any ideas what I can do to either downgrade the BIOS or get it fixed? I will appreciate your help on this. Thank you very much.

Try Bios Recovery

1) power off laptop

2) press and hold CTRL+ESC

3) power on laptop + (keep doing step 2, until you are at Bios recovery)

4) Select Recover Bios

Your laptop will load bios from your Efi partition and install it in to your board. Let it do its job. It will reboot many times. If successful , you'll see Alienware logo and it wilm boot to Windows. Good luck.

me too .. i did this stupidest thing before reading other people advise ..  i made a big mistake . i should not have updated the BIOS  . My 15R2 was perfectly well with Bios 1.7 ...

My advice to others .. pls dont update to the BIOS VERSION 1.11

I made a terrible mistake and i dont know why DELL is still keeping the update system alive

@WasifSal that bios is fine. I updated successfully from 1.8.0 to 1.11.0 on Oct 30, 2020.

But have in mine this, as described by another user:

  • open and read BIOS webpage installation instructions, etc. Always download update files onto your system and then install, etc.

Please note that the installation of BIOS updates must be done incrementally. One after another, without skipping a BIOS update. BIOS update files are not relatively large in nature because the BIOS memory chip is small. Trying to install the new BIOS update version (without the intervening update versions) does not install the cumulative update attributes of all the previous updates. It is imperative that the Dell BIOS update process is followed, or unexpected problems will arise and there is a risk that the system will be bricked.

So which bios did you upgraded from?

Hi @ThomasAAT  oh yes, remember this user's post at m15 R3/m17 R3, new BIOS 1.7.2, and 17 R3, BIOS issues

Note you are happy to plagiarise without acknowledging any particular user, or giving the actual user's contribution any Kudos. But you can remember the source, to copy and paste into your post in this thread.

@crimsom sorry to have copied your answer without @ you. But in my defense I was doing so, but your user did not show up when I typed your username so took the easy way out for the case of giving an answer. The function seemed to temporally been down.

I will make sure to dont do the mistake again.

Hi @ThomasAAT  it is not about being formal, its about giving users the incentive to keep giving their free time to help other users. This is not paid for Dell Support, giving Kudos and acknowledgements is all about being a good member of this user to user forum.

Hi @ThomasAAT  explanation is not convincing. Even if the @ process was not working, user name could still have been typed in. You have been given links to user's posts, but still no Kudos. You are not sincere.

@crimsom ok, notes taken. I am not as formal as you. I was not worried that you wouldn't chime in to say you was the Arthur.

@crimsom yes I am 100 percent agree with you on that. And I will continue to do so. This was a glitch from my side. But you added a fix for the glitch so you got the Kudos and acknowledgements. Now let's go on and leave this behind as an example of the importance of giving Kudos and acknowledgements if using another users replies.

Thank you.
