Hi!

First, make sure the heatsink and fans are clean.
Second, replace the thermal grease with a good quality one and the thermal pad.
Third, use laptop on a base that allows good ventilation.
Fourth, use HWInfo64 and setup the Fans manualy to work at maximum RPM when it reaches a temperature of 75oC on the CPU and 70oC on the GPU. (it will make a lot of noise, but on my Alienware 17 R4, I can play Assassins Odyssey at 2.5K in the best graphics configuration with 4.3GHz overclocking without throttling)

Try this and tell if it worked.

Daniel, look this video... how to set fan speed.

I will try all of the above.

I used HWinfo to set fan speeds.

Maybe my GPU fan is dead? It doesnt make any noise when I turn it all the way up.

CPU reaches 99oC even on 5400RPM (I think that's my fan max?). It is an i9-8950HK.

edit: I have now noticed that the CPU fan and GPU fan seem to be linked together? I found their sensor reading in the sensor page and they both respond only when I change the CPU Fan speed manually. GPU Fan manual set up doesn't do anything.

Hi!

My laptop set max fan speed up to 7.000RPM. As soon as possible I post photos with the fan setup. I believe it is not configured correctly. GPU and CPU fans work separately and have sensors for their individual activation.

Are you using overvlock? The base frequency of 2.9GHz and turbo 4.8GHz?

Played around with undervolting now. Using MSI Afterburner to undervolt GPU and Throttlestop to undervolt CPU. HWinfo to control fans.

About the fans - I seem to have to sensor readings for the fans. CPU fan maxes out at 5500RPM and GPU fan maxes out at 6500RPM. Still, I only have the ability to control the fans from the CPU fan toggle, as if theyre linked. For example, I can't set my GPU fan to work at 6500RPM and the CPU at 3000RPM. And I think I only hear one fan working, not sure. Maybe my GPU fan sensor is lying and there's actually no real spinning happening or they're linked together so I can't tell their noise apart.

Managed to undervolt the processors to manageable degrees and stable performance. Disabled CPU boost, so it is currently running at 2904MHZ and doesn't throttle down when I play. GPU is underclocked and undervolted at 1500MHZ with a relatively stable 89C.

What I am left wondering is whether I need to replace my thermal paste or does this computer overheat by design.

edit: All the readings I presented here are with Rocket League max settings 1080p resolution.

Hi

Try exactly same like that:

2020-06-18 (3)_LI.jpg

Processor finished with "DTS"

Remember to open HWInfo64 and click the Fan icon. Leave it open for fan speed customization to be enabled. Otherwise the native Alienware/Windows system will control it.

Using ThrottleStop to leave the CPU without the boost on my laptop (2.9GHz) processor temperatures range from 65-70 oC. With either momentary peak of at most 73oC. Cpu Fan RPM doesn't even reach the programmed maximum (I adjusted to the maximum rotation of the Fan when it reaches 75oC).

Strange that two CPU Core always get hot than the other two... about 5oC.

Yes, I have it set up pretty much the same. Still the two fans work together. I have listened closely on the back of the laptop, and indeed they both work, together.

Decided to try to give my computer away to a lab around where I live. I don't have the expertise to repaste and reinstall thermal pads, in case I need to. My computer definitely runs hotter than what you described.

Thank you a lot!

Replace the thermal paste with some Server-Grade thermal paste.

The thermal pads on yours probably turned into soft/ineffective heat dissipaters so you should replace them with Arctic ones.

Get a Cooling Pad, the ones that fit 11’ to 19’ ones.

Use SpeedFan instead of This HWMonitor everyone gives You.
