Follow these steps to solve this problem: 1. Install Dell SupportAssist. 2. Install all the updates and firmware software that the app recommends. These steps ought to solve the problem.
If he's trying to install a 980M with the 120Hz display he needs to set the BIOS to UEFI and reinstall Windows. I don't think the 980M will work in Legacy mode. It could be a reason for the black screen.
He would have to put the old card back in and set UEFI mode, Disable Legacy ROM, Disable Windows 8 Secure Boot and then reinstall Windows.
He should download windows 10 instead of windows 8 because of all the weird issues with windows 8 such as it being made for a touchscreen instead of a laptop unlike windows 7 or 10 and plus support for 8 already stopped ever since people chose 7 over 8 and 10 over 8.
The Windows 8 secure boot option is in the BIOS. It isn't related to what OS is installed. The option is still there and enabled when Windows 10 is installed.
Have you connected the hdmi port to the External monitor or tv and saw if you can see a picture in there? Also try the Power button + D When turning on the pc.

EDIT: I mean Windows 8 Fast Boot, not Secure Boot
