17 R1, CPU upgrade options
Hey all,
l am here again with another question about my Alienware 17 R1. In good form, I thought to open a new thread instead of changing the subject of one I already have going.
It has a “Deployed on” date of January 9th 2014. It has 16GB of ram, two 1TB SSD, as well as the original I think Windows 10 (maybe 16GB M.2 SSD). I still have the original 750GB spin drive, but took that out to preserve originality when I swapped to SSD. It has a GTX 765m GPU, which I’m waiting to find a decent priced 780m (I don’t want to go crazy and I know that the 780m is a drop in upgrade).
My question is CPU upgrades. It has the i7-4700mq (qm.. depending on where you look online) and it goes pretty well, but I was wondering what a general opinion would be for an upgrade to match the 780m?
I am also looking into maybe one day upgrading to 32GB of ram.

The best you could upgrade to might be the i7-4940MX. Such as the one here at eBay. But on a 9 year old system do you really want to start spending on upgrades rather than go to a much newer/new system.

I got it off eBay from a shop that does storage auctions… sold for $90 as/is untested for parts.. I asked if there was actually anything wrong with it, they said it was password locked.. I bought it based off the fact it looked in good condition.. once I got it, only ended up being windows password locked.. i installed w10 and everything is working fine.. battery is even 98% of original capacity.. age isn’t an issue.. don’t like the fact the new ones have everything soldered to the motherboard anyways.. I’ve got a M17X R3 that I just upgraded as much as I could as well.. paid $100 for it to begin with. They’re pretty sturdy machines and my kids like them. I’ll check out that cpu, thanks for the info!

Now I understand, a bargain that cannot be passed up. I have had a few of those myself. Happy to help out!

So, here I am posting on my old thread again.. I’m going to go for that i7-4940mx.. but I wanted to get my hands on the triple pipe heat sink for the CPU and GPU.. I can’t find the part number for the CPU heatsink, but have already found the GPU triple pipe heat sink to go with the Nvidia GTX 780M I found for it, also got a great deal on some TeamGroup ram for it, all 32gb.. off Amazon for a very fair price... any information I can already find (or lack there of) in the manuals has already been scoured over. Just looking for the part # for the cpu heatsink so I can run the 3 pipe version.
Thank you.
