Hi Peter, yes you can upgrade to the 970M and 980M by using a modded driver and also a 1060 and 1070 with a little extra work.

I have 17 R1 with stereoscopic 3D screen/ 120hz. I have successfully installed new GTX 980m from 880m. I noticed I lost my 3D function and I'm stuck with an old GPU driver from last year 419.35 Date 03/01/19.   When I go to BIOS Diagnostic F12, I get 8 beeps and a black screen.

How do you modify a driver? The latest driver available this March 2020 is  GPU 442.59.

It can seem tricky to modify a driver the first time but once you do it a few times it is super simple.

This guide is pretty helpful to learn. If you still find it hard then I can do it for you. I will need the Hardware ID from you though. Go to Device Manager - Display adapaters - Right click on the 980M - Properties - Details - select Hardware ID. There will be 4 lines of Hardware ID code. I need to know what the first or second line is to mod the driver for you.

Hello, I am also wanting to upgrade the GPU on my Alienware 17 R1. I have an i7 4910MQ processor and a Geforce GTX 780M, and I am wanting to upgrade to a 1070. I am just curious as to what the extra work you described would be

Hi there yojimbojones,  my screen is 120hz. I upgraded my Alienware 17 R1 GPU to GTX 980m from 880m. I lost my 3D function and still looking for a way to enable it. So sorry for the late response.
