17 R1, Windows 10, GPU fan not working

17 R1 GPU fan not working on Windows 10, yes on bios.

Hello people, sorry for my bad English I'm not native. Since 12 weeks more or less laptop start getting hotter and hotter and I notice the GPU fan is always turned off.

I got a problem with GPU fan when I do the test on Alienware FN+ turn on gpu fan move, so slow but move.

I have try HWinfo, fantest and another 4 programs I got always the same problem, the no detect the fans. OR they detect both fans together and when I try to make them move only the CPU fan move.

I have upgrade BIOS alienware control panel center and everythings but still not working. I try a new game and  it is impossible to play that hot. I'm gonna broken the computer.

Any solution for this?

Try an ePSA and see what it returns.

click F12 when your restarting and then click the ePSA diagnostics and see if the fan is broken.

Try reinstalling the Intel thermal and dynamic platform again or manually set it on the command center.

or you can set the fans to performance mode.

other then that it’s a fan replacement or the sensor has gone bad.

Ahh so you have the 17 R1 or 18.

Did the fan issue start when you installed the 980M? It could be a vBIOS problem. Can you check what vBIOS you currently have? Download GPU-Z and it will tell you on there.

EDIT: Also you should need a modded driver for the 980M. There was talk that support was added for the 900 series on the 17 but other people I have dealt with said that the drivers from Nvidia still didn't work. The 18 was released for a short time with the 980M so driver support was added in the later BIOS'

Did you mod your own driver?

Buts it’s a slot right? So it’s like a desktop, you don’t need to update for a new GPU to install it in.

Laptops are a little different than desktops in regards to GPU's. Modded drivers are required to run cards that were not originally supported in the laptop BIOS. I believe that AMD cards are different but I only have experience with Nvidia MXM cards. I'm surprised you haven't come across this exact thing with your RTX 2080.....

The 18 was released with the 700, 800 and 900 series Nvidia cards and anything higher requires a modded driver. The 17 was released with the 700 and 800 series cards and anything higher than these requires a modded driver.

My M18x was released with the 600 series so I needed modded drivers when I had dual 780M's and now with the 1070.

Oh, I understand. Well I mean I’ve come upon issues when trying to install the RTX 2080 into my 18 but I was really happy when I got it to finally work.

Not sure but i think come from long time but i notice now, i remember computer geting hotter and hotter and now is a big problem.

No. But i had problem installing the drivers nvidia web page tell me i got no graphic card and then after using windows update, it detected and auto installed not from oficial web page, only from windows upgrade and looks fine.

Also after install like 10 programs for control fan i could make both fans working but always at 100%, so they always working at 100% a lot of noise for let the pc on during the night or working in word. Not fan detected gpu.jpg

There is one driver that will install when you try to find a driver through the Device Manager. It will be version 356.xx or something like that. It's a really old driver. Are you able to check for me? Right click on your Windows Desktop and select the Nvidia Control panel. It will show your driver version on the first screen or you can go to Uninstall a Program in the Control Panel and it will show your driver version there as well. It may not fix your issue but you really need a newer one and it's possible that it could fix your issue.

If you are running on this old driver then you will need a modded driver. I can mod one for you or you can try to do it yourself. Here is a guide that helped me when I was learning how to do it.

If you'd like me to mod one then I'll just need you to confirm your Hardware ID.

Go to Device Manager - Display Adapters - Right click on the 980M - Properties - Details - Select Hardware ID from the Dropdown box. There will be 4 lines of code. I just need the first or second line.

It's a modified bios.

No need to mod the system BIOS with the 980M. I believe an unlocked BIOS is required for the 10 series cards with the 60Hz display as the video mode needs to be changed but not with the 120Hz display.

Some cards need a different vBIOS flashed if they were previously in a laptop from a different manufacturer. If you don't have the correct vBIOS then the card will have a Code 43 error or you'll have issues like no fan control.
