17 R3, can't install firmware

Hi,

I have an Alienware 17 laptop and mine has been misbehaving ever since I got it about 2 years ago. I have a firmware update that is 'urgent' but because my laptop doesn't boot up after a restart it won't install it so I'm stuck with this old firmware with no way of updating. I have to hold down the power button for 10 seconds then let go and press the power button again so it will boot up, I have to do this every time I want to start it. Once it starts up I will get a blue screen and have to wait for the laptop to reboot but still no changes to the firmware. My Laptop used to be super fast at starting up but now it takes 5 minutes at-least, even after formatting and reinstalling windows it is still the same. For a £2000 laptop I expect it to be able to download a firmware update with ease. I don't want to take my laptop apart to have to do correct this issue as it shouldn't be so complicated. Can anyone help please?

Hi @Drummeruk,

You can run the update by creating a bootable USB and running the update outside of Windows.

If the issue persists, you can contact our out of warranty department at 866 287 6727 opt4.

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply. I have found the driver page for my system BIOS update but there are no details on how to install it via a USB driver that I can see. I have never installed a bios update this way so I am not too confident in doing so.

Is there a UK phone number that I can call?

Thanks again!

Are you not able to shut down your computer correctly?  Does it hang just before turning off with the lights still on?  If so, you're another victim of the bricked BIOS version 1.4.4 Dell released about a year ago.

If you aren't under warranty any longer, Dell won't help you.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/intel-me-completely-offline.825561/ is my thread outlining how to fix it.

Go through customer support, but if you have the problems I listed above, your only fix is in my link unfortunately.  We're there to help if you go through with it.  The good news is your computer will be good as new once it's done.
