17 R3, OC Controls fails to install
Hi,
I have an Alienware 17 R3 with 2.8Ghz i7 which my purchase invoice says can be boosted to 3.8Ghz.
I've downloaded the correct notebook Alienware Command Center 4.8.23.0_A00 for my service tag and I get AlienFX, AlienFusion, Alienware TactX, and Alienware Adrenaline. Everything works with my Graphics Amplifier and all the panel LEDs can be configured.
I downloaded the correct OC Controls for my system 1.0.4.0_A00-00 but it fails install with "this installation package is not compatible with this computer". Digging a bit deeper I see the vendor return code 4294967293 in the log.
I have enabled CPU boost in the BIOS (1.14 I think), and allowed the setup access through the firewall, and run the setup as an administrator.
Any ideas how I can get the overclocking working and my i7's up to the 3.8Ghz?

Hi @MigliaR17 looking at Alienware Command Center Quick Guide | Dell US, Alienware features matrix for Alienware 17 R3 and 17 R4 reveals that OC Controls is not used on 17 R3.
Intel CPU Turbo-Boost activates automatically when this feature is enabled.
Intel CPU overclocking feature is available when the CPU has this capability. In some instances CPU overclocking must the enabled at the Dell factory. Please search internet to determine if CPU i7 core designation is HK or similar, and can be overclocked.
As there seems to be confusion if laptop is 17 R3 or 17 R4, please download and install the Belarc Advisor utility that will search and reveal laptop's system profile. The motherboard serial number will include service tag number (private information, do not post in this public thread) and this should be used to get Dell support.

You are confusing turbo boost with overclocking. Your system's CPU is capable of shifting speeds up and down according to system load. However, bear in mind the top quoted speed is available only under very specific circumstances -- only with a single core operational, for one of them. The Intel CPU drivers handle the speed of the CPU.
ONLY if your system has a CPU model ending in "K" is it capable of being overclocked -- that is, driven beyond its design specification. If you have a CPU such as the i7-7820HK, it can be overclocked by software. If you have something like the i7-7700HQ, it cannot.
