17 R4, AlienFX issue, possible BIOS problem

I am having issues with AlienFX working on my Alienware 17 R4 after installing a new SSD.

I clean installed Windows 10 and installed all the necessary drivers according to dell support including the new BIOS 1.2.4 (3/8/2018 release).  When I try to access AlienFX, it says "The theme you are opening is not compatible with this computer.  You will not be able to apply the theme."  I tried the AlienFX Tester and I get "It seems there is some problem with the AlienFX board." and fails the test.  My keyboard and side LEDs are stuck on a cyan color and only half of the LEDs turn off if I put the computer to sleep.  They all turn off if I shut down.

I tried putting my old SSD back in and I'm getting the same issues.  It was working fine before.

Is it possible to revert to an older BIOS?  I read somewhere that it was not possible with the newer BIOS.

Hi @coppil,

Check if there is any exclamation mark on Device Manager.

Also, you can try by re-flashing the BIOS version.

Finally, clean reinstall of Windows again (something in the installation could have gone wrong).

Hello @Alienware-Eimy,

Yes, I have an exclamation on a "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)".  I read somewhere to uninstall it and reboot.  I tried that and it got rid of the exclamation but AlienFXTester still failed.  The exclamation returned after i rebooted again.

I've tried to load an older BIOS but it tells me the current version is protected. Also, I've reinstalled Windows several times already with the same problem.

In another post, someone mentioned changing the number of cores in msconfig. That didn't work for me.

I have the same issue. I've already restored my computer and still same. What should I do?

I am having the same issue with AlienFX. I also see the yellow exclamation on the same USB device mentioned in the previous post.  If I right click on the alien head in the task bar, I have no option for quick change or go dark.

Please advise.

Thank you,

BW

I actually just updated the software and that fixed my issue. I didn’t have to go through any of the steps in other posts.

Hope that helps.
