17 R5, no power, AC adapter LED turns off after plugging into laptop

Hello

As the subject shows, I have a 17 R5 purchased in 02/19, out of warranty now, which from yesterday refuses to power on.

The ac adapter light is on while in power socket. As soon as i plug it in to laptop the light turns off and it does not power supply the laptop.

The same situtation happens with the battery plugged and unplugged.

Have anyone experienced the same issue? somewhere i read about motherboard failure which seems an expensive issue.

Any help appreciated.

Thank you in advance

Welcome to the Dell Community @theQz

Sorry to say but 99.999% of the time when the light on an AC adapter goes out when plugged in means the system has a short.

It could be a mainboard, but before going that expensive route:

Use a flashlight to check inside the USB connectors.  Look for bent pins causing a short inside.  If they all look OK, you may want to replace the DC jack:

It may be the cause of the short.

Hi @theQz  Checking the DC plug and the external + internal appearance of the laptop's socket is a good starting point. You could disconnect and remove the DC Power Jack Socket Plug Cable to have a good look. If the laptop then powers on from the battery, the shorting fault is somewhere in the DC Power Jack Socket Plug Cable

Its got to be the DC jack. If the battery powers on the laptop then kill the laptop by letting the battery run out then charge it with the adapter. If it doesn't charge then the DC Jack is at fault.

Anyone know what part # or how to obtain a new DC jack?  Seems like they are on a cable now and no longer soldered to MB.

Have a similar issue, with both a XPS L702X and a Dell E6540. Both units will not operate with the correct rated wattage power supply but will only use a lesser wattage PS... 1st Case, Dell E6540 130Watt PS will not charge the battery and the power supply power light on the plug will go out. A 90 Watt unit will work. 2nd Case, a Dell XPS L702X 150 Watt PS will not change the battery and the same power light goes out on the plug end. Using the Dell 130 watt that didn't work on the E6540 will now work with XPS L702X but gives a wrong adapter warning. Battery will fully charge but takes a lot longer... I have tried the battery calibration procedure on both with no luck. Both machines were running Windows 10 Pro and updated, it seems after the updates they stopped working. Help please...

I would consider replacing them actually and what that means is replacing the DC Jack. I dont understand how a higher rated adapter would cause an issue like that if it shipped with it. For example, I use an Alienware 17 R3 with a 6280HK overclocked to 4.2Ghz and a 980M maxed out in core clocks and 300Mhz on the memory. I use a 330w adapter and it works fine. It even gives me a warning if I'm using too small of an adapter.
