17 R5, not waking from sleep using external KB & Mouse

Hi Guys,

Bit of an odd one, but my Alienware 17 R5 running Windows 10 1803 refuses to wake from sleep using an external USB keyboard and mouse. Please note that this only occurs when the laptop lid is closed and connected to an external monitor (connected via mini dp to Alienware 34")

HOWEVER if the Alienware 17 R5 lid is open, and I put the unit to sleep via the start menu, the keyboard and mouse will wake the computer up....so it appears the issue is only when the lid is closed.

Things to note, only the USB port on the right hand side appears to wake unit up, and only after "USB wake support" is enabled in the BIOS.

Does anyone have any ideas? Although it's not a big deal I would prefer it if I didn't have to lift the lid each time to turn the laptop on and then close the lid again.

Thanks,

Hi @Gr3chie,

That is normal. The machine won't wake up from sleep with the lid closed, nor without that enabled in BIOS. Unfortunately, it is the expected behavior and there's no official workaround for this to change.

That's quite interesting. My Alienware 15 R4 is the worst computer I have ever purchased. This runs always close to 100 degrees.

I've bought a stand to be able to put it vertical, which makes it run quite less hot, but that means that unless I leave my laptop on 24/7, everyday I need to disconnect the cables, remove it from the stand, open the lid, wake it up, close the lid, put it back to the stand, connect all the cables.

If you guys had managed to produce a product that run cool, I wouldn't need to use a vertical stand. Funnily enough, my wife's MacBook Pro is capable of waking up using external peripihals. That's why Apple is Apple and Dell is ... this. I guess I'll continue my guest of telling all the people that I know to not ever buy Dell.

Hi @Gr3chie Win10 System Settings includes lid settings options for what happens "When I close the lid.". So struggle with @Alienware-Eimy assertion that it is normal for 17 R5 not waking from sleep using external KB & Mouse.
