17 R5, using both the HDMI and mDP
I just on boxed my laptop and woah! it is HUGE! I attempted to connect two monitors one on the HDMI via a HDMI to DVI dongle and then another monitor using a mini Display Port to DVI dongle. each work separately but not at the same time. The laptop has an Nvidia GTX 1070 graphics card is there a setting I need to change to unleash the magic to make this work? Really want it to post a photo on Facebook :)

I did a bit more poking around and I needed to activate the second monitor (put a check in its little checkbox) inside the Nvidia control panel. I am now surrounded by Alien Goodness! Thanks for the quick response!

I'm surprised those aren't working together, but (I'm guessing here) it COULD be because transmitting in HDMI or DVI rather than DisplayPort requires the GPU to have some additional circuitry, I believe called a TMDS or LVDS chip (it's been a while), and it's possible that it only has one such chip, which might be why you can run either display from either output, but not both at the same time. If that's the case, you'd have two options for addressing this:
- If either of your displays has a DisplayPort or Mini-DisplayPort input, use that instead so that you only have one display that requires the GPU to provide an HDMI/DVI signal.
- Buy an active Mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter, like this one. Whereas the more common passive adapters require the GPU to fall back to providing an HDMI/DVI signal out of its DisplayPort/Mini-DisplayPort output, active adapters have a chip built into them that performs the DisplayPort to DVI signal conversion within the adapter itself, so the GPU gets to output native DisplayPort, removing the requirement for it to have the additional circuitry to run a second HDMI/DVI signal to drive that display.
