Check with one of the major music production suppliers such as Sweetwater -- they know the hardware that works, and what doesn't.

The newest of the Alienware 17 systems (the R5) is 3-4 years old -- you're probably better off with something newer for that purpose, such as the current M17 or X17 models.  And for most of those seriously into music production, the Macbook Pro has been more satisfactory than any PC platform.

i have a macbook but last with intel and worried that boot camp will not be updated for my gaming in windows sooner or later.  i hear about the good processor and hardware in the x17 may be good just worried about the latency issue

I'm late to this thread.  I have an Inspiron 15 Gaming 5577 that I use for on site recordings.  You have to 'tame" the Dell install, or do a clean install with just OS and DAW applications (what I did) to be useful.  I use Cakewalk (used to be called Sonar) and Studio One 4.6 Pro.

Gaming laptops are best for DAW work as they have more cooling and heavier power adapters, which are needed for extended uses (powered on for extended times).
