Area-51m R2, CPU noise

Hi all.

Yesterday I received my brand new area 51 R2 laptop - and after 3h of using it I'm literally furious.

The static noise coming from top right corner is SO loud! please see the movie below.

To be fair, not sure should I return it and buy a different one as I'm still in 14 days return window.

I can't accept this as I can't focus on my work hearing it. I'm not a gamer so my fans are next to nothing, and you can hear this "hard drive noise" from other end of my room.

Did you have this kind of issue? Does every area51 have this issue?

If it's that objectionable, yes - return the system for a refund or replacement.

A gaming notebook system is never going to be a quiet system because of the necessity of a fan moving air most or all of the time.  You may be better off with a desktop system, which will be quieter particularly if you go with a liquid cooled system.  Or, a lower-performance notebook with a more conservative CPU and GPU choice will not need the level of cooling this system does.

to be fair - I'm fine with fans - they can be loud, but I don't think what I'm experiencing is something common. I understand some components on Graphic cards can be noisy, but not THAT noisy.

Switching to the desktop is not an option - I need mobility.

I'm curious how Dell is gonna handle this - as I used a nice promotion when I bought it - which has finished now.

You're likely to find a replacement of the same model equally noisy.  These just are not designed to be quiet systems.  As for the rest, if you return a system for a refund, you'll pay a restocking charge and shipping at minimum;  the rest will be refunded.

If you order a different model to replace this one, you may be able to ask them to waive the restocking fees.

This is a desktop CPU in a notebook chassis - it needs extensive fan cooling.  If you're reordering, consider an XPS model, which should be quieter.

bur I would prefer to exchange it - less hassle to be fair. Gonna give sell a call tomorrow

Hello,

I purchased an Area-51M R1 back in April 2020 (Almost a year now). I had the exact same noise situation soon after I received the laptop so my comments below are based from my experiences.

My personal advice: It's not worth it. Return it or even refund it...get yourself a decent PC that can do everything this laptop cannot and much more.

You can read my post about my issues here: https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware/Area-51m-R1-motherboard-replaced-3-times-HELP/m-p/7829565#M40458

Long story short...save yourself and your $$$ before it's too late. I really wish I did back then.

Good luck

Hi @Lygi  guess the new Area-51 R2 Desktop is the Area-51m R2 Laptop shown in video with no audio. If delivered with a fault, do not wait, request new replacement system or full refund, as soon as possible.

A quick update for anyone interested.

today spoke with a guy who received identical system as mine. His machine is just silent without buzzing static sound.

Dell support is useless so far and they didn’t help at all. They are literally thinking (6 day now!) about my case with no answer/solution.

I expected that faulty machine will be exchanged with no questions asked - oh well looks like Dell has different approach. I have sent a final email to the support and today afternoon I’m gonna return the laptop and try my luck with other brand.

im very very disappointed how my case has been treated. My trust to Dell as a brand is gone.
