m15, cannot update Realtek Audio Console

I'm on an Alienware m15 (with the i7-8750H and RTX 2070 Max Q).

My system has the Realtek Audio Console 1.3.179.0 installed. That's quite out of date, and I'm trying to see if I can solve a microphone selection problem I'm having. So I downloaded the latest version listed on the support page for my laptop, 1.14.226.0:

https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER06481846M/2/Realtek-Audio-Console-Application_XXM98_WIN64_1.14.226.0_A04.EXE

It launches the Microsoft Store App, where it tells me I already have it installed. So I uninstalled it, rebooted, ran the installer I linked above again. Microsoft Store App opened, I clicked Install, it downloaded and installed the old version, 1.3.179.0.

I tried wsreset, that did not help.

I also notice that when I run the installer and click the Install button, a console window opens, I see a complaint that a registry key can't be found (can't see which one), and then the console window disappears. Not sure if that could be a root cause or just a distraction.

How do I get it to install the latest Realtek Audio Console version?

Hi @dealioyo  welcome to this user to user forum.

Thank you for providing a good description of the Dell Support for Alienware m15 Drivers & Downloads. The Realtek Audio Console Application Installation instructions are being followed, not sure what is says on the last window. It should have said update successful, Restart Required (to save changes to Windows). However, your window said Registry Key missing, but did not elaborate.

Using local admin account, go to Event Viewer, wait for the systems logs to load, and look for the entry whose date and time matches the attempted update. If you cannot recall date and time, attempt to install Realtek Audio Console Application again. Refresh the Event Viewer and look at the new system log.

If the Event Viewer is not logging this fault, use the all powerful Disk Check application to make sure windows file associations and registry are not corrupted. This will take about 20 minutes.

Using Local admin account, go to This PC, right click on OC (C:) drive, select Properties, open Tools tab, and start Error checking. You will get another window that might say error checking is not required, but click on Scan drive. Do not use the computer. Allow scan to finish. If problem(s) found, it will correct this problem. When Scan has completed, Restart to ensure changes are saved to Windows.

Try to install Realtek Audio Console Application again. Hopefully installation will be successful.
