m15 R4, keyboard not responding

All of a sudden I started up my laptop today and the keyboard was totally unresponsive. The lights are still on and I can still disable/enable the touchpad and internet using the Fn key but other than that the entire keyboard is unresponsive. Also in Alienware command center it no longer recognizes my laptop keyboard. I only got this laptop a few months ago and the keyboard is already seemingly useless. I have tried numerous things and none have worked. I reinstalled the keyboard drivers and even tried running in safe mode which still proved useless. The only thing that worked temporarily was this:

For me this is the workaround, works every time.

Shutdown Laptop
Turn On Laptop
Keyboard will not work
Press power button to enter sleep mode
Resume Laptop from sleep mode
Login/Unlock laptop (I use the On Screen Keyboard by clicking on Accessibility in bottom Right) to enter my Password
Open Device Manager
Go to Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Uninstall the Unknown USB Device
Then Right Click Scan for hardware changes
Keyboard works again till next shutdown/restart.

BIOS Alienware 1.10.1, 3/28/2022
Windows 11 with all updates installed
All Dell SupportAssist Updates Installed

I have tried downgrading to previous 1.9.0 and 1.8.0 version of the bios and still same issue. Have tried reinstalling/update all dell/alienware related drivers.

As stated it is only a temporary fix that needs to be done every restart. I'm open to any suggestions as at this point I can only think of factory resetting my device.

Two things:

First, this issue happened to me today, and your workaround fixed it temporarily. How did you even find that workaround? You're a legend for finding it and showing it to the world.

Second, I'm impatiently awaiting a real life permanent fix that doesn't involve Dell support coming to your house. If there's ever a permanent fix, @ me

Lol I wasn't the one who found it. I just stumbled upon that solution when I was googling the issue. I have no clue how the dude found the workaround. It reminds me of a COD zombies easter egg if you know what I'm talking about. Also from what I've gathered, even if Dell comes to your house and replaces hardware, the issue often comes back. Some people have had the whole keyboard replaced which did nothing and some other guy got his motherboard replaced which only solved the problem temporarily because it came back later for him.

Update = After completing troubleshooting, a DELL-Cares agent setup a part replacement.

Hi, I had the same issue back in March 2022, I've also tried everything you wrote down above, but none of them solved the root cause. Dell ended up sending me a technician to replace my entire motherboard and keyboard, and finally fixed it. But just 2 days ago I woke up and start my laptop and the keyboard stopped working again, at this point i think getting a new laptop is a better solution.

This same issued showed up immediately after one of the many updates that keep getting pushed out. Honestly I feel this is more of a software issue either on Windows 11 side or Dell side. The driver uninstalling works, if only there is a way to stop it from re installing it.

My laptop just got out of warranty a week before the issue came and now Dell have given me 500 dollar quote (SMH for that and not even considering that it ended just one week ago and issue came so soon after)

The motherboard is perfectly fine, benchmarks give scores just like how it was when I got this a year ago so I def dont want this thing opened just for a software issue.

I recently encountered a similar issue. I'm using Alienware M15 R4, and I tried many methods to solve this issue, but all are temporary. I contacted Dell support and they are replacing my motherboard!! Hopefully, that fixes the problem.

this happened again except there isn't even an unknown USB device to uninstall... no warranty left either

edit: uhhh somehow the workaround worked without even needing to uninstall the unknown device... gonna have to keep trying things

@josest2 I woke up this morning with my keyboard not working. However when I bought my mouse I bought a portable keyboard combo. The two hook up to the same usb port. Anyway what I’m getting at is my keyboard on my laptop doesn’t do anything after the update last night but the portable keyboard still works. Maybe try that?

@JLyn135 Thank you for your response, yeah the external keyboard solution works. The workaround shared above do the trick every single time. It is a shame that we bought a pretty fancy laptop that cannot be used as intended. I just updated the BIOS to the last version, same problem keyboard is dead until I execute the workaround.

@Seoulbug Did they change the motherboard or the keyboard? A lot of people had the motherboard and keyboard changed and the problem persisted. In my opinion it is a driver/BIOS issue that Dell didn't want to address with this very expensive machines.

I had encountered another problems with no backlight LCD sometimes, audio issues, 100 degree Celsius on the CPU, and the list goes on and on.
