m15 R5, keeps shutting down on its own
I recently bought a new m15 R5 2 months back. Now I am facing issues where "Slide to shut down" suddenly pops out of nowhere and the laptop shuts down on its own. I don't know what is causing this issue. I think it's due to an issue with the power button as it mostly happens when I place the laptop on my desk while it's on.

Yep, The machine will automatically shut-down itself for a variety of reasons...it's "self-preservation"
It sounds like overheating. Meaning, I was using my laptop on top of a blanket...NOT good. It can't breath. Now, I use mesh laptop stand, it tilts too. $15. Ensure you have the latest Bios from Dell too...

Firstly I had thought of the same reason for shutting down, but, it doesn't seem to be the case. It would shut down even if I started it like just 2 mins ago

Hi @GrumpyMonk is there a reason why the "Slide to shut down" option has been enabled?

Hello, I have the exact same problem since yesterday (M15 R5, R9, 3070, Windows 10). It happens on battery and when plugged in without any difference. I don't have any overheating issues neither (CPU and GPU between 50 and 65°C all the time when this happens, and I use a cooling pad).
I tried to uninstall/re-install all Windows updates the laptop installed since yesterday, with no results.
I enabled nothing concerning the "slide to shut down" feature, but I found slidetoshutdown.exe in Windows files.

I think I found a solution this afternoon. I noticed the issue occurred all the time when I changed the opening angle of the screen.I have already disabled the Windows actions concerning the lid, but I finally disabled the "Turn on when lid is opened" feature in the BIOS and, for the moment, everything works fine.
I hope @GrumpyMonk has already found a solution or a repair but if he hasn't, I hope this could help.

Hello,
Sadly, the issue happened again. This time, I've been able to find something in the system events.
According to it, I'm facing a Kernel 41 (63) error, here are the details of the XML file:

Hello, sadly I have not found a solution yet. But I do agree that it happened when I change the angle of the screen.

Hi @JohnMundel within local admin account, please use search on taskbar, paste PowerShell and select run as admin, individually paste the following and press enter key to run :
SFC /SCANNOW
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
When finished, please Restart (not Shut Down) to save changes to operating system.

Hello again,
I thought I got the issue fixed when I made a clean windows reinstall just before seeing your comment. Everything worked, until yesterday when the slide to shut down popped out again just after a windows Update. Now the laptop won't even turn on, when I push the power button, I have halphazardly one red flash, or nothing at all, or the computer turning on, displaying a blue screen CRITICAL PROCESS DIED and restarting again and again doing the same.
I don't manage to get into the BIOS anymore, but do you think reinstalling Windows 10 which was the OS I used and then switching to Windows 11 could fix the damaged process if I can access the OS recovery feature?
Thanks again for your help!

Hi @JohnMundel thank you for sharing update.
Has the "Slide to shut down" option been disabled? How to add a "Slide to shut down" option on Windows 10 | Windows Central
If windows splash screen appears, press and hold down F12 key to enter boot menu, and then run Diagnostics.
Swapping in the standby clone (copy) of your OS(C:) boot drive is a good option when the original OS(C:) boot drive cannot be recovered. Install new drive with windows already installed is a good option.
The following YouTube video shows how to fix blue screen CRITICAL PROCESS DIED.

GrumpyMonk,
Please try the following steps and let us know the results:
- Update your system's BIOS and chipset drivers as instructed here.
- If the problem continues, try this
> Restart your computer and, during the boot up process, start tapping F12 to access the Boot Menu
> Look for the option called "SupportAssist OS Recovery", select it, and hit enter.
> Once the tool has loaded up, you can skip the tour. Then you will see four different options on the screen. Select "Repair PC" and start the repair.
> Once done, click on "Done." It will take you back to the main screen of the tool. Select the three dots on the top right corner of the screen and select " restart.

Hello, I tried the SupportAssist OS Recovery method and it recovered to a waypoint. But, after it restarted, and i tried to unlock using a PIN, it showed that “Your system is offline. Please use a different sign-in method” and it wouldn’t let me connect to the wifi. I used usb tethering to unlock it but as soon as the desktop loaded, the screen started flashing and i was not able to do anything. I can only shutdown by long pressing the power button. It keeps happening even if i restart.

Hello, i have still not got the problem resolved and the shutdowns are becoming really annoying. I tried contacting dell support but they were bot able to identify the problem and no solution was found

I am having this exact problem. I bought the Alienware m15 R6 and a year and a half later after being moved or bumped the "Slide to shut down" pops up and then the laptop proceeds to shut down no matter what I do to prevent it. I've taken my laptop to a repair shop and talked to dell support many times with nothing helping. I am guessing there is a disconnection of sorts in the hardware but why would the "Slide to shut down" be popping up? Either way I am unfortunately going to have to dump 1k-2k for another gaming laptop and so soon after purchasing one.
