m17 R1, temperatures while gaming
Hello,
First, I’d like to thank a lot of the active members on here who have helped me with this issue. Shipped 2/20/19, warranty expired 5/21/20. However, I’m curious if there’s more improvement to be made regarding temperatures and throttling my M17 encounters during gaming sessions?
As many of you probably know, these laptops, without tweaking, easily approach 100°C during gaming. For the first year or so I’ve owned this laptop, I curbed the power (100% to 99%) and that kept temperatures during gaming ~80°C. Lately, I’ve decided to try to bump that back to 100% and look at other options to improve performance while simultaneously keeping temperatures as low as possible. I purchased a Kootek gaming pad when I first purchased the laptop, and have always used it. Here’s what I’ve done so far (Throttlestop):
- I have undervolted to -125 the CPU Core and CPU Cache
- Tuned Turbo Ratio Limits down on all cores (1 & 2, 41 to 37), (3 & 4, 41 to 37), (5 & 6, 41 to 35)
- Speed Shift EPP to 100
- Disabled BD Prochet
After some toying around with settings and 3DMark, it was apparent that ‘Turbo’ was causing the throttling and high temperatures. By disabling Turbo in Throttlestop alone, it helps temperatures significantly, though also hinders performance. I’ve increased my 3DMark score considerably since moving back to 100% power and tweaking a few things in Throttlestop, though now I’m curious if there are other improvements to be made? For reference, I’ll game on max settings and achieve ~100fps at 85°C - 95°C.
I am by no means a computer genius, so I appreciate any thoughts and comments.
