m17 R3, battery won't charge

My new M17 R3 won't charge when plugged in, regardless via AC or USBC. In BIOS, it can detect the correct wattage of input power. Just not charging. Tried all the troubleshooting on Dell's suggestion page but no luck. Had to send back to Dell.

Anyone got similar issue and knows why?

Btw, the timeline of my experience

  • 27/05 - order placed
  • 17/06 - delivered
  • 19/06 - battery won't charge
  • 23/06 - dell collected it
  • 09/07 - dell returned it without any service
  • 12/07 - the faulty system is still with me

That is where I am getting very disappointed with Dell's Customer Care. I asked for replacement on 30/06 when I one of their support agent says in order to fix my NEW Alienware, they are waiting for a motherboard-related component to be shipped from Australia and it takes 18 days for that component to arrive. So I asked for whole unit replacement immediately, the agent said he would check for me and get back to me by end of that day. Surely I did not get that promised reply. Then I called again the next day. Similar response and will check and back to me. And again.... Until this week, one of their managers talked to me without any useful information but saying I should be grateful cos they approved my whole unit replacement.

Here is the funny thing: they will need to collect the original system in order to proceed the whole unit replacement. I said "the system you are asking is not even with me. you collected it from me about three weeks ago". Then they just decided to collect the system directly from their service center without sending it to me first. So I waited for about three weeks for nothing?

More funny things keep happening. 1-2 days after the above conversation, I received a call from Dell service team, saying the repair is completed, and will send me the system today. I was totally confused but said "okay, I will be home waiting for the system to arrive". Then Dell support called me, explaining they were unable to collect the system from their service center because their office was closed. I was really confused and did not ask further. Then about 4pm that day. The system was finally back to me. And surprisingly, no service was conducted at all. So the laptop was totally dead. So I immediately dropped an email to their manager asking an explanation. Later one support agent called me. Saying he got an explanation to that. Then he began “the reason why we didn't repair it is because you asked for whole unit replacement”, with a tone of judgement. I totally got lost. because I have made many calls to them. And during their previous calls, other agents told me the service was completed. (okay I am going to omit some similar conservations like this otherwise the post will look like an essay.) I asked if they can send me the voice recordings I made during this 1-2 months with them. Surely they said no. otherwise, it would be very interesting to share with some medias I believe.

So now the faulty unit is still with me. And I don't know when they will come to collect it and according to them, they can only start the replacement request after they collect the faulty system back. and that will take another 18-30 working days

Try contacting dell for a replacement battery since your system is still in warranty  and they will send a guy to replace it for you.

I can’t find the battery on any site. Try to contact them again and when they reply just say I need a battery replacement only. Not a full laptop replacement.

The whole unit replacement is expected to come on 29/07. So never mind how they plan to deal with the original system now.

Just to add a line to the problem, I don’t think the issue is caused by the battery itself. As I have done all the troubleshooting suggestions by Dell.... The hardware checks all passed and the updated BIOS can detect the battery and source of input correctly. So it is mostly related to motherboard and I have seen three users reporting battery issues on their brand new m17 r3 on reddit now. All ended up with whole unit replacement while I seem to be the one experiencing longest delay
