m17 R3, high pitch fan
Alienware m17 R3
Hello,
I recently bought an Alienware m17 R3 second hand online.
The laptop is great, gaming runs as smooth as butter, performance, speed, is superb. But only got one issue, the annoying high pitched fan noise even on idle. I don't mind the fans running on idle, but what really bother me, is the high pitch noise created by the fan. I try to observe and turns out it came directly from the fan. DO you have any idea what's going on here and is it normal? Here is the link of the video to show this noise I meant :

Hi @ConanJ77 welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.
Did the seller knowingly sell this second-hand Alienware M17 R3 without revealing its annoying high pitched noise? Amazon and eBay have additional online purchase protection.
Thank you for sharing the opening post's share_link to video. Have played this video on my Alienware laptop and on external monitor, but it seems that noise frequency is beyond normal hearing range.
The source could be fan noise or motherboard coil whine noise.

Please visit Warranty and Service Extension - Dell Community to determine if there is option to get Dell warranty.
If fan noise, replace fan and remove all the accumulated dust/debris from exhaust vents. (Dell warranty would replace the Fan and heat-sink assembly.) User would replace CPU & GPU fans, look at white label on fans for Dell part number: example Amazon.com: ZHAWULEEFB Replacement New CPU+GPU Cooling Fan for Dell Alienware M17 R3 M17 R4 P45E 0H5TYJ 0CNV63 FM7J FM7H DC28000ROSL EG50061S1-1C010-S9A K13087 DC28000RNSL EG50061S1-C060-S9A DC12V 0.38A Fan : Electronics. User could replace Dell Alienware m17 R3 Alienware m17 R3 CPU / Graphics Cooling Heatsink Fan Assembly, Dell P/N 2KTG4.
If motherboard coil whine noise, Dell warranty would replace motherboard. User would replace the coil using $100 Dell Laptop Repair | Dell Repair | Laptop Repair | Notebook Service Center (parts-people.com), or similar. There are unsubstantiated reports of users not in Dell warranty, carefully applying cyanoacrylate adhesive (Super Glue) to coils that do not get hot, to stop coil whine noise.

Thank you for the response.
The seller didn’t reveal or show the fan noise. And no, I didn’t bought the laptop in ebay or Amazon, I bought it from my local online store platform in Indonesia, thank you.

And by the way, the issue came from the fan not the motherboard, and you mentioned that the noise frequency is beyond the hearing rangde. Does that mean that some people can’t hear the fan pitch noise?

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out. The seller only provide in store warranty for 1 week but the seller didn’t accept any returns, as it had been a week since I got the laptop. I will attempt to bring to the Dell service centre to see if they can replace the fan and fix the issue.
Thank you.

Hi @ConanJ77 thank you for sharing update.
The human hearing range is commonly given as 20 to 20,000 Hz, although there is considerable variation between individuals, especially at high frequencies, and a gradual loss of sensitivity to higher frequencies with age is considered normal. Hearing range - Wikipedia.
Does your local online store platform in Indonesia accept returns or provide a warranty to fix the noise issue at zero cost?

I have a laptop which is the Alienware m17 R3, bought it off from eBay refurbished with the following specs :
i7-10875H
RTX 2080 Super
FHD 300 Hz screen
32GB DDR4 2666 MHz memory
It seems like even on idle task, like opening a browser, watching YouTube, it runs on 70-80 degrees. Until when I open apps like Photoshop or Illustrator simultaneously, the temp would ramp up to 90 degrees even reach 100 degrees, which of course causes the fan to be loud and annoying. This is really annoying because when I brought this laptop to work at a quiet office, my colleagues would always ask 'What sound is that?" or like 'Your laptop is loud' which makes me angry. So next I tried undervolting the CPU, still, can't even run below 60 degrees. The iGPU is also disabled for some reason. Is this normal for the laptop to run hot even on light task with this spec?
I really need help with this. I sold my Razer Blade 17 2020 (The laptop I previously used) due to issues and start regretting on switching Alienware which is worse.
