m17 R3, rear Thunderbolt port stopped working

Guys, I have the Alienware m17 R3 for about 6 weeks now and today, I noticed that my Thunderbolt port is no longer working. I was working Sunday when I last used my laptop.

- I checked for updates for Windows 10, all good.

- I used Dell Support and updated the BIOS, the update worked but still nothing Thunderbolt-wise.

- I used Intel Assistant to see if there are updates, it's all good.

- I uninstalled the Drivers and then the Thunderbolt app, and reinstalled both. Still nothing.

- My dock which was connected to the Thunderbolt port works when I connect it to the USB port.

I am not sure what is happening. Can anyone help? Thank you in advance!

Don't know if you could get this issue fixed, but, I wanted to post the solution I got from Reddit.

(Please search "any_one_have_ucmucsi_acpi_device_and_usbc_not" for the actual link, attaching link here seems to be impossible.)

It seems to be a much-experienced problem for Alienware users and this question pops up when I googled for a solution.

The solution is:

  1. Unplug your charger from your laptop.

  2. Open Device Manager (Use Task Bar search by typing Device Manager)

  3. Go to the USB Connector Managers and then hit drop down so UCM-UCSI ACPI Device appears.

  4. Right click over UCM-UCSI ACPI Device and hit Uninstall Device (If an option saying Delete with a check box appears next to it DO NOT check/tick the box! We only want to uninstall it not delete it!) Confirm the uninstall when it asks.

  5. Shut down and switch on your laptop/computer, don't restart as it doesn't work just doing that (Make sure to leave your charger unplugged)

  6. Go to Device Manager again and check if issue has resolved. If it has then you can plug your charger back in.

Press [Win] key +[R] and run "services.msc".

Have you tried running an ePSA?

press F12 when restarting and then choose the ePSA option to check the system.

Have you set the bios settings to default?

have you tried to charge something from the thunderbolt port and that may have caused it?

I had my dock always connected to the thunderbolt port since day 1 that I got the laptops, my friend! Even when I powered off the laptop, I left the dock powered on.

On Sunday, Aug 23rd, there did not seem to be anything amiss when I was using the M17. After I came back on Tuesday, Aug 25th and turn on the M17, I noticed my mouse, mouse pad and speakers were not working (they were all connected to the dock). That was when I realized something was not right.

But I do not remember doing anything that could have broken the port.

I will try to get into the BIOS and see if I can reset it. But I only updated the BIOS after the notice came up on the Dell Assistant App and after I noticed that the Thunderbolt was not working.

And I have to admit, I am a noob so please forgive me if I ask silly questions. Thanks for helping!

BTW: I just noticed something within the BIOS. In the “Advanced” tab, there are options for Thunderbolt. It is ok for “Thunderbolt Boot Support” to be disabled and “Enable Thunderbolt Pre-Boot Modules” to also be disabled?

I followed what you advised, and ran the diagnostic tool. It says “All tests passed.” So I gather that nothing abnormal was detected. But when I switch my dock to one of the USB ports, the dock and it’s attached equipments works fine. I am scratching my head on what happened...

I think those options mean you can boot something from a thunderbolt device such as a external HDD or flash drive.

Hi @sai_bharadwaj the chain symbol in the header says insert/edit link. Capture text and then click on chain symbol to assign the link to that text. Windows 10 update should allow copy and paste url to be inserted anywhere in your post, check that open in new window option is used.

@sai_bharadwaj Thank you so much ! This issue was driving me mad but this fix worked for me.

Lost 2 rear Thunderbolt ports immediately after a Bios update.
