m17 R3, WD19TB Thunderbolt dock question

I know the standard Thunderbolt WD19TB only comes with a 180w power supply and my Alienware m17 R3 requires 240w. So my question is, I have a Prevision 5560 for work and a WD19TB with the USB-C power adapter. My m17 R3 is the old style round power plug. Can I hook up the WD19TB and plug it into the USB slot and use the functionality of the WD19TB and the power from my Alienware power adaptor at the same time? Will this hurt my m17 R3?

Hi Jammerou812

I'm using the WD19TB with my m17 R2 for years already and it works just fine.
Besides the fact that the 180W are not sufficient to feed my m17 R2, the on-off button of the WD19TB is not supported by Alienware. The rest works perfect (attached Monitor, additional HDs, network).

My power supply situation seems to be the same as you describe. The WD19TB (which has its own power supply) is attached to my Thunderbolt-USB-C port while the original 240W adapter is plugged in to my Alienware m17 R2 (7.4mm round power plug as well). Internal power management does the job.

Officially - Alienware does not support Dell Docks: https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware/Alienware-Laptops-no-dock-support/m-p/8359963#M58086

So - at the end of the day it means trying on your own risk..

Hi @Jammerou812 welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

Charging from empty to full capacity takes about 2.5 hours. Unlike the m17 R2, it's possible to recharge the m17 R3 with a USB-C adapter (albeit more slowly) if you don't want to carry the heavy primary AC Adapter around for long trips. The m17 R3 can have the 330W AC Adapter (charger) to accommodate power-hungry internal parts and games.
