Open a support ticket for help. Unit is to hot IMO. CPU Unless it's an i9, shouldn't hit that high. There is a bad batch of heatsinks, your unit could have it. It happens with Automation from time to time.

Hi Alienware-Eimy,

I'm having this same problem as well but when I tried playing a game the computer overheated and went to sleep mode. I ran a CPU stress test and two times the computer went to sleep mode. Any advice?

Hi @ecto54@ThePiratePanda

Is the BIOS up to date?

What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?

Hi @Alienware-Eimy / @ThePiratePanda

I contacted Alienware on the weekend and they were able to run CPU / GPU stress test on my computer. The tests suggest that there is no problem but there have been cases where the computer goes into sleep mode. I've had gaming laptops in the past but I've never experienced one that runs this hot. We've discussed the possibility of sending it to the repair center or to get a replacement.

Try to get a "NEW" exchange, not repaired one. Also, burgain for upgrades. I have had 2 m15 new exchanges and i made them upgrade my hard from 512 SSD to 1TB SSD, my GPU from 1070MQ to 2080MQ and my RAM from 16GB to 32GB. This thermal issue is basically non solvable for alienware laptops, but you can do these:

1- drop max cpu usage from %100 to %99 in power options.

2- undervolt cpu and cap its clock speed using throttlestop (search n read articles on how to)

3- update all drivers

4- fresh install windows

IF none of these work,

5- do a thermal repaste.

Thanks for the advice, yeah I ended up getting an exchange. You're right, even with the replacement it still gets ridiculously hot.

Get refund and stay away from Alienware. Alienware laptops were having overheating issues and now they made their laptops smaller with better specs. They do not think overheating is an issue. Multiple agents told me that overheating is an issue when you are over 100 degrees average. Also alienware lies to their customers. I have been promised one thing and then next they tell me that that never happened. They also ignore emails from their customers. My emails were ignored 4th times already. When I confronted her, she tries to avoid subject. The techs have no idea about computer. I am surprised that they even know what computer is. They are mostly Indians reading off of script. It's been already 10 months since I have been trying to fix my faulty laptop. I still haven't got it fixed yet. 3 brand new laptops from alienware had overheating issues. I had 6 repair centre runs and 3 on site repairs and 1 brand new exchange so far. I am really infuriate because I paid extra for premium warranty and I got next to nothing tech support. In fact, I was helping them figuring out what was wrong and coming up with solutions. Alienware representative tells me to stop playing demanding games and play less demanding game because any MMO games will overheat the laptop according to them. If the laptop can't handle games, why is it advertised as gaming laptop. Anyways back to the topic. If you can't get refund, I would keep getting heat sink replacement through dell until you get a good one. When you get a good one, you repaste your laptop with either liquid metal or kryonaut. Use kryonaut if you don't want to risk it or don't know how to use liquid metal. Also make sure you have something underneath the computer to give better air flow and make sure you are not close to a wall or an object that is in the way of exhaust. If this doesn't work, you got to undervolt it. If undervolt doesn't work, I would get replacement laptop from dell and then sell the brand new replacement to another unlucky soul. Now it's not your problem any more... =(

They don't give you a new machine as the replacement unit. They send you a refurbished one.

UNDERVOLT, UNDERVOLT, UNDERVOLT with Throttlestop. Google it. Takes 15 minutes. Problem solved and NO Loss in performance.

Hey, may I check with you how is your exchange unit so far? I have the same issue with m17, but it is RTX 2060. Overheating so fast, keep bluescreen when running games around 15~20mins.
