We have been informed (not all customers, but some) are having issues after running the BIOS on this system. So for the moment I don't recommend you to run the update until engineering clears everything up. If the system is not having issues, it is not necessary to execute the update.
If your not concern about intels meltdown and spectre vulnerabilities then you dont really need to update bios.. But a heads up though older bios caused issues like dc cable getting burned.. the only fix is updating bios.. the most stable bios for alienware 17 r3 but without protection from intels vulnerabilities is bios 1.3.12..
Basically dells tech support/dell itself is making/creating bios for display to make face to the world that they are sorting intels vulnerabilities but in reality its there way of crippling older models so that you will have to buy a new laptop.. LOL
Yes, that would be the safest. 1.4.4 is pulled from the drivers and download page, so now worries there :)
Make sure your battery is fully charged and that the AC is plugged in. Unplug all unnecessary devices, just leave the power plug. And if you have overclocked the CPU change that to the stock clock speed.

Just make sure to update one by one. If you flash from ver. 1.1.5 to 1.3.12 (or 1.6.1) it is a huge jump and will most likely brick you system.

So you mean, I should go like this:
1.1.5 > 1.2.8 > 1.2.15 > 1.3.6 > 1.3.9 > 1.3.10 > 1.3.12 > 1.6.1 (skipping 1.4.4)
