x17, no page up/page down keys, remapping possible?
I've kept myself from buying an Alienware x17 (both R1 and R2) mostly due to the keyboard layout. From the previous Dell generations, I am very much used to dedicated Page Up, Page Down, Home and End keys, which are essential in several productivity applications (e.g. InDesign) and immensely convenient in general editing. Pressing Fn in addition (when there are already keys used in a combination in the programs) or searching for Home / End in the top row is not very convenient.
Now I understand the numpad had to go away to allow for better cooling (albeit I could live with a thicker laptop, typing this on an old 17 R1.). So I guess this is not something they will go back on. However, the dedicated volume / mic keys on the right added in the new layout are not really useful to me, it's not something I'll adjust constantly anyway (does anybody do that?).
So I have two questions:
- Is there a way to let the Dell engineers / designers know about my opinion? Of course, I'm holding back on buying a new model which is something which may show up in reduced sales (if there are more people with such an opinion, that is). But I'd love to communicate why ;-).
- For those who already have a laptop from the X series: Is it possible to remap those volume / mute / mic keys to something else without issues? I certainly know remapping "normal" keys is possible without issues, but I wonder whether these keys are handled on a lower level (e.g. muting the Mic in hardware) which would make software remapping impossible.
To me, both the older key layout (Home and End on the right and Page Up / Page Down next to the cursor keys) was ideal. I am also perfectly fine with the key layout found on some other laptops which have Home / Page Up and Page Down / End all in one row on the right instead of those volume keys.
Any feedback appreciated.

I agree. Having dedicated Home, Page Up, Page Down, and End keys in a column on the right, plus full-size cursor/arrow keys, was a logical and functional arrangement. It's so useful for editing and for navigation in documents, web browsers, etc.
Also, IMO it makes no sense to place the power button in the upper-right corner of the keyboard where the Delete key should be. A power button is pressed, not typed, so it should not be part of the keyboard where we can hit it accidentally. And, putting it in the Delete key position means we will often hit it when we want Delete.
I've wanted to buy a new XPS for a few years now, but I dislike the current keyboard layout. If there were an option to buy the old layout I would pay extra for that.
