Client backup Avamar: File access error 5139
Hi there,
While backing up clients with Avamar, I'm getting a ot of clients that get interupted. I'm also getting a notification about the pagefile not being accessible, that's really strange as it's not even set to be backed up in the dataset.
As we are using identical pc's and the same installation procedure for Avamar I could not find any reason for this.
Here's the part of the log file that shows the error:
2009/04/29-08:55:48.53099 [avtar] <0953> WARN: ntsecurity error:init:GetFileSecurityW(1) "C:\pagefile.sys", LastError=32 (code 32: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process)

Hope someone can help me out!

When you install Avamar client software, while finishing, a option comes ie. to install open file agent. Just check it. Then click finish. Then you follow instructions and install open file agent.
Just try that for one client for which you are getting this error and then take backup and see whether that resolves your problem or not. Hopefully it should work.

I installed the open file agent but it did not change anything; still got the ntsecurity errors. This is not the same client as the log sample I submitted earlier.

There is very much difference in two:
No error has came now: file access error is no longer there, neither pagefile.sys warning. Remaining are only the warnings. For that you can see the files which are coming in warnings and find out whether they exist or not.

Your right. I installed the openfile agent on the 1st machine. Now there's no error anymore about the pagefile. The log has changed and only the ntsecurity errors remain. I find it very strange that this error occurs as I added "c:/documents and settings/*/Local Settings/*" to the exclusion list. Why would Avamar bother about directories that are excluded?

2009-05-04 14:35:05 avtar Error <0000>: VSS: GetSnapshotProperties failed with 'VSS_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND'
2009-05-04 14:31:39 avtar Error <5244>: Unable to open directory "C:\" (code 1005: The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted).
Very strange finding; I activated the backup about 6 times and 1 backup was fully completed without any error. Now what's going wrong with the other 5? It seems this has something to do with the VSS, does it?

1. Incomplete O/S installation.
2. Reboot may be required to complete installation.
3. There is a security program running on client system that is preventing the installation from completing.
Resolution:
Use the steps below to determine if VSS installation has not completed.
On the client system:
1. Does the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\vssvc.exe exist on that client system"
2. Test if VSS has been completely installed.
* Open a command shell.
* Issue the commands below. Sample expected output has been provided in blue.
1. vssadmin list providers
vssadmin 1.0 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool

The error above implies VSS has not been completely installed.
Recommended action.
1. Check if there is any software running such as virus scanners, malicious software scanners, or any other utility that is inhibiting the installation of any software.
2. Check both the client and servers for these applications.
3. Disable these utilities and then reboot.
4. Rerun the tests to verify installation is complete.

I wanted to let you know that in the end we have not been able to find a direct cause for the problem. We are pretty sure that the problems are due to the fact that the hard disks is just not able to respond quickly to the Avamar back-up task; the disk is just too busy..... (antivirus, encryption and the user that is working on it).
What we did find out is a sort of work around. I found out that the exceptions shown, can be corrected by just (simply) defragmenting the hard disk. First we only reacted on clients with problems but it's just a matter of time before the symptoms are coming back.
Now we have equipped all our laptops with a monthly scheduled defragmentation. It maintains the hard-disk so we should not encounter exceptions easily.
Thanks for your help and best regards,
Jan

Run the following command from the avs\bin directory and it will do everything but send the data over the network to the Avamar data nodes.
avtar -c --degenerate --stats --status=60 --comstats --nocache --logfile=test2.log
You can analyse the log by checking the lines containing "avtar Info <5100>" and learn how quickly the process is scanning the data. On a typical server running SCSI disks we expect ~1 million files or 100GB of database data per hour

If you could mark whichever one of Randeep's posts helped you solve the problem as the 'correct' answer it will enable other people who have the same issue to quickly find the suggestion which helped solve it.

I started to be more and more convinced about the fact that the exceptions had to be related to the performance of the hard disk. Our laptops are also equipped with hard disk encryption, which is hitting the performance as well.
Then I also noticed better results on clients with a faster hard disk (7200rpm) compared with older models (5400rpm). Only then I tried to optimize the hard disk by defragmenting it and discovered that almost all issues are solved.

We are experiencing the same error on one of our servers. We are backing up the paths c:\path\1\ , c:\path\2 and c:\path\3 but the avamar generates an error opening the security descriptor of pagefile.sys
It seems to try to freeze the volume c: 3 times because we are backing up 3 paths on the same volume. I suspect this is the problem as code 0x8004230d means :
VSS_E_OBJECT_ALREADY_EXISTS - The object already exists on the server.
We do not see this error if we only select 1 path on the volume for backup. Is anyone seeing this issue?
