Frequent Hanging in GUI

Since we upgraded from v6.1 to 7.0.1 SP1, I notice the GUI frequently hangs for a few seconds when I click on things.  I have also noted this a brand new Grid also, that was never upgraded.  This is more of an annoyance than anything else and I understand that Java is probably partially to blame.

At first I thought it was when my laptop was on the wireless network vs the wired, but it does not seem to be a bandwidth issue.

Never the less I must ask if anyone has noticed this and if so have you found out anything that helps?

Does the GUI hangs on particular tab?
The same version of server which I am using works perfectly.

As you said, it might be a java issue as well. Please confirm Java version you are using.

I notice it almost every time in the activity window, basically I click on it and it take 2-3 seconds (just enough time to be annoying) to refresh. [Same thing when I sort by time or something else that causes it to re-load the window]  Keep in mind I 72 hours in my activity windows is 3000+ items.  But still I did not see it pause like this in 6.1.  Probably just going to have to live with it.

Once it refreshes, it seems fine.

The Java version I'm using is 7u51.

I have seen the same behavior on other computers with various java versions.

I have this issue with both of our grids on multiple computers with different versions of java.  But I see it totally hang that I have to actually end task on the process and start over.  I have a local install of the client, or going through EM on a citrix server.  I don't see a difference.

It's all tabs are slow, but especially on the Activity page.  It took ~10 minutes to open the filter page. Then several more minutes before the drop downs were usable.

I have seen the hanging you describe, even with 6.1 I saw that a few times, but 7.0.1 I am mainly seeing the slow "Refresh" kind of problems.

J.H. - end user, I can't comment on GUI hangs but I spoke with the devs and they felt that the behaviour you described was likely a bug. Did you have a chance to open an SR for this behaviour?

I also, and from a installed console on my pc, and from a Launched from EMconsole on someone else's pc.

What I need to know is if anybody else has seen the activity refresh issue.

go to activity Monitor..

page down 3 screens, and high light a job, now quickly go back to the top.

when the screen refreshes does it pop you back to that highlighted job?  (version 6 did not do this, but we are seeing this)

wonder if it is happening just to us or to anybody else.

the ticket is still open, but I don't know which way they are going with it,   an issued caused by java? a bug they cannot duplicate? or by desgin?

Before asking you to open the SR, I confirmed with the developers that it is not by design.

v7_0_1_61_HF_58932  has a fix for GUI slowness on Activity monitor. This doesn't fix the activity screen refresh issue though.

yes I did,  first they said reinstall java, then they said it was by design.  but they also said they could not reproduce in it the lab.

I also have this problem with GUI performance. It is incredibly frustrating and makes the GUI almost unusable at times. This is on multiple different PCs with Java update 51. We recently upgraded to Avamar 7 and have only noticed it post upgrade.

Half the time I have to force the GUI to close when the Activity Monitor page is open.

I just opened a ticket and there is hotfix 59488 that is supposed to fix this issue, it's cumulative hotfix for the MCS.  Open an SR and mention that hotfix.  I will be installing it later this week.  YMMV

*EDIT* Just notified there is a newer hotfix released today.  60601

Can anyone share whether HF 60601 fixed the problem, and/or created a new one?

This is painful ...

How this work

We applied it on the first grid and it worked wonders, I have no delay.  It installed a new GUI version and that even helped my other grid.  I am installing the hotfix on my second grid today.  We have had no other issues pop up from this.  It takes about 30 minutes or so to install if you don't have to reboot the utility node.

We found the biggest slow down was managing grids across WAN's.  If it was local to us on the same network, the performance was only slightly horrible.  But with the hotfix I can do everything across a WAN now.  There are some issues managing a grid without the hotfix with the hotfixed GUI, I couldn't set a schedule for a node, it crashed the hotfixed GUI so I had to use the old one.

My experience, install the hotfix. YMMV
